About The Position

The Animal Technician provides routine husbandry care of laboratory animals across multiple animal facilities following standardized laboratory procedures which adhere to State and Federal regulations. Works with Lead Animal Technician as needed. May assist with research staff as needed. Weekends and holidays are required. As a health care organization, we have the responsibility to do everything in our power to care for and protect our patients, our colleagues and our communities. We require that all staff be vaccinated against influenza (flu) as a condition of employment.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent
1-3 years of experience in an animal facility
ALAT certification (Note: This is a requirement. If you aren't currently certified, you must sit for the exam after 18 months from date of hire.)
Must have strong attention to detail
Must be able to communicate (speak, read, and write) in English
Must be able to work well within a team and independently
Must possess basic level computer skills
Must be able to lift, push, and pull a minimum of 50lb on a flat surface or ramp
Must be able to stand for 6 hours
Applicants must be able to handle small rodents, soiled animal bedding, and perform euthanasia.

Nice To Haves

Experience working in an AAALAC accredited facility is desired

Responsibilities

Perform husbandry care for laboratory animals on a multi-building campus including daily health/cage checks, housing/procedure room checks, and cage changes following Standard Operating Procedures
Perform routine cleaning and sanitization of animal rooms and procedure rooms according to established procedures
Document completed tasks and observations and report any deviations or adverse conditions to Lead Animal Technician and/or Veterinary Technician as appropriate
Receive and house animal shipments
Practice safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods
Interact with researchers and other groups as appropriate
Provide technical assistance to researchers (breeding, study support, emergency euthanasia, animal export packing, and inter/intra building animal relocations) as needed
Assist with inter/intra building central services activities including waste management, carcass removal, equipment fumigation, housing rack installation, small equipment relocation, and cage wash duties as needed
Assist Lead Animal Technician and be able to back-up Lead Animal Technician during absences as needed
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
