About The Position

Join a team of dedicated professionals at the Monash Animal Research Platform and play a vital role in supporting world-class research while ensuring the highest standards of animal care and welfare. As an Animal Technician, you will provide hands-on care and technical support for research animals in accordance with approved protocols, legislation, and Standard Operating Procedures. Your attention to detail, ethical approach, and commitment to animal wellbeing will be essential in enabling the delivery of high-quality research services. Reporting to the Facility Manager, you will work under routine supervision as part of a collaborative, professional team.

Requirements

  • A completed Trades Certificate or Certificate III (Animal Studies/Technology preferred); OR Completion of Year 12 or a Certificate II paired with relevant hands-on work experience; OR An equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
  • Basic knowledge of husbandry, handling, housing and breeding requirements of laboratory animals
  • An interest in animal care, a strong commitment to animal welfare, and the ability to follow policies, procedures, legislation, and regulatory requirements relating to the care and use of animals in research.
  • Good organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a busy environment.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team as well as independently under routine supervision.
  • Basic computer and record-keeping skills, with a focus on accuracy and compliance.
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • A positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn new skills and procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with animals is desirable but not essential, as training will be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality animal care, including feeding, cleaning, enrichment and maintaining optimal hygiene standards.
  • Support animal breeding and colony management activities in line with approved protocols and SOPs.
  • Monitor animal health and environments, promptly identifying and escalating concerns
  • Maintain accurate animal and facility records to support research, operational requirements, and regulatory compliance.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders while ensuring all activities are conducted in accordance with ethical, legislative, and institutional requirements.
  • Prepare animals, equipment, and consumables to support research activities and the day-to-day operation of the animal facilities.
  • Uphold workplace health and safety standards, identifying and reporting hazards or incidents.
  • Contribute constructively to continuous improvement, investigations, and facility operations.
