About The Position

To provide emergency ambulance transport and basic life support (BLS) services during medical response calls for the City of Santa Monica.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 18 years of age at the time of application.
  • Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license.
  • Possession of a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate or the equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid State of California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-1) Certification.
  • A valid State of California Paramedic License may substitute for the EMT-1 Certification.
  • Possession of a valid California Department of Motor Vehicles Ambulance Driver certificate.
  • Knowledge of principles of emergency ambulance and transportation procedures including emergency medical practices and first aid.
  • Knowledge of emergency vehicle maintenance and operation, including all applicable federal and state driving licenses.
  • Knowledge of safe emergency work practices.
  • Knowledge of infectious control procedures.
  • Knowledge of emergency radio communication procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and documentation.
  • Knowledge of English grammar and composition.
  • Knowledge of effective customer service techniques.
  • Ability to safely and properly transport patients during ambulance transportation.
  • Ability to read electronic and incident maps and follow map directions.
  • Ability to work effectively in difficult and hazardous emergency situations and environments and carry out work assignments, as instructed.
  • Ability to listen carefully to understand others.
  • Ability to remain calm in emergencies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare records and reports.
  • Ability to provide effective customer service.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the general public.

  • Skill in operating emergency medical vehicles and equipment.
  • Skill in reading, writing, and communicating at an appropriate level.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from a Fire Academy or Fire Technology course work from an accredited college or university is desirable.
  • Six months experience as an EMT on an ambulance is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Drives and operates city owned ambulances and other department vehicles as directed, including driving to and from medical emergencies.
  • Responds to emergency medical calls providing basic life support (BLS) services.
  • Performs appropriate field procedures utilizing EMT-1 level skills, such as attaining and documenting vital signs, bandaging, splinting, lifting patients into ambulance.
  • Assists Firefighter/Paramedics in providing emergency medical and health care, as directed.
  • Maintains and inventories emergency ambulance supplies, equipment and routine vehicle parts.
  • Supports patient billing operations.
  • Maintains and updates records using an electronic patient care records system.
  • Operates within federal, state, county and city laws and regulations and guidelines including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Attends and successfully completes department and hospital training sessions and drills.
  • Operates advanced radios systems and other communications equipment.
  • Participates in station and equipment clean-up.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.
