About The Position

Airway Transportation Systems Specialists (ATSS) at this level are subject matter experts responsible for maintaining the safe and efficient operating capacity of the electronics systems supporting the National Airspace System (NAS). They install, evaluate, maintain, modify, and certify facilities, services, and equipment that support the NAS. This position serves with the Technical Support Operations Group and provides advanced technical support for NAS operations. The specialist integrates, restores, tests, and evaluates advanced services, components, hardware and software systems, and processes. The role applies comprehensive technical knowledge to protect system integrity and support NAS service delivery, working independently on complex systems, emerging technology, and system interrelationships. The position provides the highest organizational level of technical support for complex FAA systems. As a principal specialist or expert on major projects and program areas, the employee resolves unique technical problems, coordinates work, and recommends solutions, generally keeping the supervisor informed only of critical issues. The employee may assist with repairs and service restoration, advise on backup system availability, and recommend reconfiguration to minimize service interruptions. The role evaluates diagnostic data from integrated systems, collaborates with users, planners, engineers, and contractors on acceptance of new or modified systems, and helps resolve installation or improvement issues. It develops recommendations to improve system efficiency through modification or use of existing or emerging technology. The employee may lead projects or teams, monitor employee time, identify and track project resources, and train, mentor, and advise FAA employees, contractors, and other organizations. The position integrates Operational Risk Management into planned activities and ensures appropriate use of personal safety training and personal protective equipment during restoration and maintenance. It represents the organization as a primary technical contact, coordinating plans and resolving problems with internal and external parties, including the Department of Defense, airport management, contractors, utility companies, and foreign governments. The vacancy description further states that the selected Technician in Depth (TID) will report to the Chicago Technical Support Center and serve as the dedicated advanced technical authority for Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD). The role provides direct operational support for ORD's critical NAS infrastructure, acting as an escalation point for specialized troubleshooting, facility outage mitigation, and complex system maintenance to support operational continuity.
