About The Position

The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority (RDU) is seeking an Aircraft Rescue Fire Engineer/EMT to join their team. This role involves responding to various emergencies including fires, crashes, and medical needs, while also maintaining airfield safety and equipment. RDU is a rapidly expanding, medium-sized airport that values teamwork, creativity, and collaboration, offering opportunities for advancement and a dynamic work environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years of experience in volunteer or career firefighting
  • 1 year of experience driving and operating fire apparatus and pumps
  • Valid NC Class B Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
  • NC Firefighter or IFSAC/ProBoard equivalent
  • NC EMT or National Registry (must receive Reciprocity within 6 months)
  • NC Hazardous Material Level I or IFSAC/ProBoard equivalent
  • NC Driver Operator - Pumps or IFSAC/ProBoard equivalent
  • NC Emergency Vehicle Driver
  • NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800
  • Knowledge of Hazardous materials
  • Knowledge of OSHA guidelines
  • Knowledge of Principles, practices, procedures, and equipment used in fire prevention / suppression and protection of life and property
  • Knowledge of Emergency medical techniques and procedures
  • Knowledge of Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment
  • Knowledge of ESO Incident Reporting software
  • Skilled at Written and verbal communication
  • Skilled at Analysis and problem solving
  • Skilled at Firefighting and rescue
  • Skilled at Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships
  • Skilled at Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
  • Skilled at Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios
  • Ability to work 24 hour rotating shifts (this includes: nights, weekends, holidays, inclement weather, emergency call back and/or hold over)
  • Ability to Identify security concerns
  • Ability to Maintain cleanliness and readiness of fire station and equipment
  • Ability to Maintain accurate records and reports
  • Ability to Perform minor service work on systems
  • Ability to Handle stressful emergency situations in an efficient and calm manner

Responsibilities

  • Operates fire engines to respond to fire, crashes, and rescue calls; and uses mobile equipment, hand tools, and extinguishers to suppress aircraft, structural, forest, and automobile fires.
  • Responds to medical emergency needs of passengers and terminal visitors until advance medical care arrives.
  • Maintains awareness of security concerns on the airfield and reports concerns to Communications.
  • Checks airfield and reports debris, malfunctioning lights, and hazards.
  • Completes and maintains proper recordkeeping of fire and medical call reports.
  • Checks and services fire extinguishers and Automated External Defibrillators in airport buildings.
  • Performs fit testing for air packs and N-95 mask; performs service testing for SCBA and ladders; and tests and services fire hydrants.
  • Attends classes in firefighting, rescue, and emergency services techniques and methods; and trains with other departments to facilitate mutual aid response.
  • Cleans and maintains fire stations and adjacent grounds; and maintains supplies and materials on fire and rescue vehicles.
  • Performs related work as required.
