About The Position

The AI Storyteller and Communications Specialist is an embedded communications professional within the University's Office of Strategic Communications. Reporting to the Senior Director for Strategic Communication, the Specialist is responsible for developing and executing narrative strategies that highlight the research, educational programs, and daily activities of faculty, students, and staff throughout the entire university. The immediate catalyst for this role is the Georgetown Initiative on AI Use Principles, launching in fall 2026. This role acts as the primary translator of advanced computational, technical, and ethical concepts for a general audience. They produce compelling written, digital, and social content that elevates the university’s visibility among federal policymakers, national media, prospective students, and the broader scientific community.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Science Writing, Computer Science, or a related field.
Minimum of 3 to 5 years of professional experience in science writing, technology journalism, or strategic communications.
Proven ability to translate advanced technical, mathematical, or scientific concepts into compelling narrative prose accessible to lay readers. (A writing sample demonstrating this translation is required for consideration).
Demonstrated experience managing professional websites, social media accounts, and digital email marketing platforms.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and consultative skills, with a track record of building trusted relationships with academic researchers, administrative staff, and media professionals.
Exceptional organizational skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple complex communications projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.

Nice To Haves

Master's degree in Science Writing, Technology Policy, or a related field.
Foundational training or coursework in computational data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, or cognitive neuroscience.
Practical experience working with graphic design and presentation software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Canva, PowerPoint) to create infographics, slide decks, and digital assets.
Established connections with regional and national science, technology, and public policy journalists.
Demonstrated experience leveraging generative AI tools in real-world communication workflows (such as transcription, data analysis, copywriting, or visual design assistance).
Familiarity with Content Management Systems (like WordPress) and Marketing Automation solutions (like MailChimp).
Prior experience working within an academic research environment, federal laboratory, or a technology-policy think tank is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

Translate complex scientific and technical research into accessible articles, profiles, and media content for a general audience.
Communicate a unified narrative about diverse research, teaching, and service activities of Georgetown in the AI space.
Manage the university’s digital AI presence, including website updates, social media campaigns, and monthly newsletters.
Work alongside the university’s media relations team to pitch research and practice developments to national journalists and prepare faculty for public and policy briefings.
Develop and implement communications strategies for major conferences, speaker series, and promotional events.
Collaborate with faculty and students to identify and highlight compelling, human-centric stories about AI initiatives.
Ensure all communications materials are accurate, stylistically consistent, and aligned with the university's brand guidelines.
Promote the ethical use of generative AI tools within the Office of Strategic Communications through training and workflow integration.
