EY•Hartford, DC
•$125,500 - $261,600•Hybrid

About The Position

The AI-Native Experience Engineer will design and build interaction patterns that enable people to understand, direct, and confidently collaborate with capable AI systems. The role shapes experiences for delegation, decision-making, oversight, and recovery, making AI behavior transparent, controllable, and useful in real-world work. The position owns experience architecture and the interaction layer, translating user research into production-ready solutions. It works across product, engineering, AI, security, and research disciplines to create intuitive and trustworthy experiences that help people accomplish more while keeping them in control of important outcomes. The role is part of Challenger, an EY program developing next-generation services where AI enables fundamentally different services and delivery methods. Challenger Core develops and maintains shared technology, methods, and risk and quality guardrails, while teams contribute reusable tools and practices.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of relevant and applicable experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study.
  • A portfolio of shipped interaction design, design engineering, frontend engineering, or HCI work showing both thinking and implementation.
  • Production proficiency in modern web or application technologies, delivering responsive, performant components.
  • Experience designing for AI, search, recommendation, automation, or another adaptive system.
  • Practical command of semantic UI, WCAG, WAI-ARIA, keyboard interaction, and assistive-technology testing.
  • Experience extending reusable component libraries and supporting adoption across product teams.
  • Strong human-AI interaction judgment across complex, asynchronous workflows, balancing usability, transparency, and human control.
  • Information design skills that clearly communicate uncertainty, sources, permissions, and system state.
  • Ability to carry design intent into production under realistic latency, streaming, and model variability.
  • Research judgment combining qualitative insight, behavioral data, and experiments to guide product decisions.
  • Collaborative communication across design, engineering, product, and control specialists.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% and flexibility to work in the office in a hybrid capacity.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with agentic interfaces, long-running tasks, or human-in-the-loop workflows.
  • Experience building streaming, real-time, or multimodal interactions across devices or languages.
  • Contributions to inclusive research, cognitive accessibility, open-source design systems, or human-AI interaction practice.
  • Exceptional candidates from product, service design, operations, transformation, policy, domain, and entrepreneurial backgrounds are welcomed; no particular degree or certification is required.

Responsibilities

  • Define experience principles, interaction architecture, and reusable patterns for AI-assisted and agentic products.
  • Conduct workflow research and usability testing with diverse users, including people who use assistive technologies.
  • Build high-fidelity prototypes and accessible production components for web, application, conversational, or multimodal surfaces.
  • Translate user intent into interaction specifications for clarification, uncertainty, memory, personalization, permissions, and action boundaries.
  • Make plans, progress, evidence, tool activity, costs, and outcomes legible without overwhelming users.
  • Design controls for preview, approval, interruption, editing, undo, retry, escalation, and human takeover.
  • Measure task completion, effort, correction burden, recovery, and trust calibration.
  • Partner with AI, platform, security, and evaluation specialists to improve the overall experience.
  • Work across product, engineering, AI, security, and research disciplines to deliver production-ready solutions.
