About The Position

EY is hiring an AI-Native Product Engineer for Challenger, a program building the firm’s next generation of services by applying AI to develop new services and rethink existing offerings. Small, dedicated teams develop and test ideas in real conditions; solutions showing business value and operational readiness transition to the business for adoption and scale. Challenger Core develops shared technology, methods, and risk and quality guardrails to support this work. The role is an end-to-end product engineering position focused on turning emerging AI capabilities into useful, trusted, durable products. The engineer works close to users, product decisions, and production code, moving between user research, prototyping, secure service development, evaluation, and production improvement. The role requires balancing speed with accessibility, maintainability, reliability, and evidence-based decisions. The position requires up to 50% travel and flexibility to work in the office in a hybrid capacity. EY accepts applications on an ongoing basis.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of relevant and applicable experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study.
  • Record of taking customer- or employee-facing software from an unclear concept through launch, learning, and adoption.
  • Strong full-stack capability across modern frontend, backend, API, data, and cloud technologies, demonstrated through shipped work.
  • Hands-on experience building products with large language models, retrieval, tools, or comparable AI application patterns.
  • Evidence of automated testing and behavioral evaluation for systems with variable or probabilistic outputs.
  • Demonstrated responsibility for telemetry, debugging, reliability, incident response, recovery, and performance improvement.
  • Experience working directly with users, designers, and product leaders to turn evidence into better product decisions.
  • Consistent record of clear specifications, maintainable code, thoughtful review, and sound technical trade-offs.
  • Strong ability to build maintainable production software across modern interfaces, services, APIs, data, and integrations.
  • Practical knowledge of model APIs, context design, retrieval, tool use, structured outputs, and agentic patterns.
  • Ability to identify real user problems, frame clear hypotheses, and simplify solutions when evidence challenges the original idea.
  • Strong production instincts for observability, accessibility, security, performance, reliability, recovery, and responsible use.
  • Comfort collaborating across product, design, domain, platform, and control teams while remaining accountable for outcomes after launch.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% and flexibility to work in the office in a hybrid capacity.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building workflow automation or collaborative AI products that interact with real business systems.
  • Experience with identity, knowledge systems, permission-sensitive information, or regulated and confidential settings.
  • Strong instinct for clear interactions, accessibility, and reducing user effort in complex workflows.
  • Experience improving the quality, latency, reliability, or economics of production AI applications.
  • Startup experience, open-source contributions, or another clear example of high-agency product building.
  • Exceptional candidates from product, service design, operations, transformation, policy, domain, and entrepreneurial backgrounds are welcomed; no particular degree or certification is required.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with users and domain experts to understand workflows, observe friction, and identify opportunities for AI.
  • Convert product hypotheses into concise specifications, prototypes, and small releases that produce early evidence.
  • Build complete product slices spanning user experience, services, data, AI behavior, and enterprise integrations.
  • Design AI behavior, including instructions, context, retrieval, structured outputs, and tool use; use adaptation or tuning only when supported by evidence.
  • Develop representative tasks and automated evaluations to assess usefulness, correctness, safety, accessibility, and improvement.
  • Instrument user journeys and connect adoption and task success to system behavior, latency, failures, and cost.
  • Build permission boundaries, secure data handling, human checkpoints, graceful degradation, recovery, and rollback into products.
  • Release incrementally, monitor production behavior, respond to incidents, and convert failures into lasting product and engineering improvements.
  • Balance user experience, quality, speed, reliability, and cost, using deterministic software when it is the more dependable choice.
  • Share proven components and evaluation assets with the broader platform while remaining accountable for their performance in product workflows.
