About The Position

MISO’s AI Governance Engineer will help build and evolve the enterprise AI governance framework as the organization expands its use of generative and agentic AI. The role develops practical guardrails, controls, processes, and oversight mechanisms that support responsible and secure AI use while enabling innovation. It establishes a scalable, risk-based approach to registering, evaluating, monitoring, and governing internally developed, purchased, and vendor-embedded AI solutions. Working with technology, security, compliance, HR, and business partners, the engineer builds governance practices that can be adopted across the organization. The role requires ongoing learning and refinement as AI technologies and risks evolve, and calls for a collaborative, hands-on approach to balancing innovation with risk management. MISO manages the electricity grid and energy market in the Central United States, helping ensure reliable power for 45 million Americans. The position offers an annual base salary range of $173,000–$198,000 and is eligible for an annual bonus if individual performance and company objectives are met. The level will be determined based on experience and knowledge.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field; a master’s degree, relevant certifications, or equivalent experience may also be considered.
  • 8+ years of experience in software, data, or machine learning engineering, including at least 3 years building or evaluating production ML or AI solutions.
  • Experience designing, building, and operating shared platforms or internal products used across multiple teams.
  • Solid understanding of model training, evaluation, and failure modes, with the ability to design sound evaluation approaches.
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools.
  • Experience in at least two of the following areas: evaluating or monitoring ML, generative AI, retrieval-augmented, or agentic systems; observability, telemetry, or alerting for production systems; test automation or quality engineering for non-deterministic systems; MLOps/LLMOps, including experiment tracking, versioning, and model or artifact registries; data quality and validation practices for AI-relevant datasets; or cloud cost management or usage analytics.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or other advanced degree.
  • Familiarity with AI governance or risk frameworks such as NIST AI RMF or ISO/IEC 42001.
  • Background in statistics or experiment design.
  • Experience in the energy industry.
  • Relevant certifications, including IAPP AI Governance Professional (AIGP), Microsoft Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate (AI-103), Microsoft Azure Machine Learning Operations Engineer Associate (AI-300), or ISO/IEC 42001 certification.

Responsibilities

  • Own the technical vision, architecture, and roadmap for the enterprise AI governance platform, building and operating it as a scalable internal product.
  • Define a repeatable, risk-tiered governance framework covering measurement, evaluation, monitoring, and incident response.
  • Deliver a central AI registry and intake process to identify, register, and tier high-risk and high-visibility AI systems across the enterprise.
  • Build automated capabilities for registration, observability, and evidence capture, maintaining traceability across data, models, prompts, versions, and evaluations from deployment onward.
  • Create reusable evaluation tooling for ML, generative AI, and agentic systems, and validate that governance measures and model-based evaluations are accurate and continuously improving.
  • Define monitoring thresholds, incident-response protocols, and rollback runbooks for AI failure, degradation, or policy violations, and validate them through exercises such as tabletop tests.
  • Provide leadership reporting on AI quality, usage, cost, and value.
  • Collaborate with security, privacy, compliance, risk, and the AI Working Group to drive consistent governance adoption.
