AI Biologist - Human Physiology

LatchBio•San Francisco, CA
•$140,000 - $180,000•Remote

About The Position

Latch builds scientific benchmarks to evaluate AI agents across biology, working with frontier labs and pharmaceutical companies to measure performance on real biological workflows. The AI Biologist will develop rigorous scientific evaluations that test AI agents’ ability to solve complex problems in human biology and disease. This science-first role calls for deep expertise in human physiology and an understanding of how physiological systems function, interact, and respond to perturbations. The role applies scientific expertise to identify meaningful research problems, work with experimental and clinical data, and establish defensible ground truth for evaluating AI agents. Deep biological understanding, scientific creativity, and critical thinking are valued more than advanced programming expertise. The position is full-time for US employees and W-2; candidates outside the US work as contractors. The role can be fully remote, although onsite work is preferred at Latch’s Mission Bay waterfront office in San Francisco. Compensation is $140,000–$180,000 OTE, with quota-based earnings and a four-week ramp paid at full OTE. US benefits include fully covered health, dental, and vision insurance for the employee, 50% dependent coverage, a 401(k) with no match, and 12 days of PTO to start.

Requirements

  • PhD, MD, or equivalent research experience in Human Physiology, Integrative Physiology, Translational Medicine, Endocrinology, Cardiovascular Physiology, or a closely related field.
  • Deep understanding of human physiology, including interactions between organ systems and mechanisms regulating human health and disease.
  • Strong track record of independent scientific research, experimental design, and interpretation of complex biological findings.
  • Exceptional scientific reasoning and critical thinking, with the ability to formulate and evaluate mechanistic hypotheses.
  • Experience analyzing experimental, physiological, or clinical research data.
  • Working knowledge of Python or R for scientific data analysis.
  • Familiarity with AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Codex, or willingness to learn and incorporate them into research workflows.

Nice To Haves

  • Research experience spanning multiple physiological systems.
  • Experience with human clinical studies, longitudinal datasets, or physiological intervention studies.
  • Experience integrating molecular, physiological, and clinical data.
  • Familiarity with computational or quantitative approaches to studying human physiology.

Responsibilities

  • Develop challenging, biologically meaningful research problems that evaluate AI agents’ scientific reasoning and problem-solving abilities.
  • Identify, evaluate, and analyze datasets from published research, clinical studies, and physiological experiments to establish reliable ground truth.
  • Assess experimental designs, biological mechanisms, data quality, and alternative explanations to ensure evaluations are scientifically rigorous.
  • Investigate where AI systems succeed or fail at interpreting biological evidence, connecting physiological mechanisms, and reaching scientifically defensible conclusions.
  • Collaborate with scientists and engineers, using AI-assisted research and coding tools to accelerate scientific analysis and benchmark development.

Benefits

  • Health, dental, and vision coverage fully paid for the employee and 50% covered for dependents in the US.
  • 401(k) plan with no match.
  • 12 days of PTO to start, with more as employees are promoted.
  • Four-week ramp paid at full OTE.
  • Full OTE when quota cannot fairly apply, such as when a new project is starting, the platform is down, or the employee is assigned a special project.
  • Catered lunch and dinner and unlimited snacks at the San Francisco office.
