AI Biologist - Human Physiology

LatchBio•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Latch builds rigorous scientific benchmarks for AI agents across biology and works with frontier labs and pharmaceutical companies to assess how AI agents handle real biological workflows. The AI Biologist will develop scientific evaluations that test AI agents’ ability to solve complex problems in human biology and disease. The role calls for deep expertise in how human physiological systems function, interact, and respond to perturbations, and involves identifying meaningful research problems, working with experimental and clinical data, and establishing defensible ground truth for AI evaluations. This is a science-first role emphasizing deep biological understanding, scientific creativity, and critical thinking over advanced programming expertise. The biologist will design challenging research problems, assess biological evidence and AI system performance, and collaborate with scientists and engineers using AI-assisted research and coding tools. The position may be fully remote, though onsite work is preferred at Latch’s Mission Bay waterfront office in San Francisco. US employees are full-time W-2; workers outside the US are engaged as contractors. Compensation is $140,000–$180,000 OTE, with earnings tied to weekly quota attainment and a four-week ramp paid at full OTE. US benefits include a guaranteed state-set base salary, health, dental, and vision coverage, a 401(k) with no match, and 12 days of PTO to start. The company supports work authorization sponsorship for H-1B, O-1, and TN visas and STEM OPT.

Requirements

  • PhD, MD, or equivalent research experience in Human Physiology, Integrative Physiology, Translational Medicine, Endocrinology, Cardiovascular Physiology, or a closely related field.
  • Deep understanding of human physiology, including interactions between organ systems and mechanisms regulating human health and disease.
  • Strong track record of independent scientific research, experimental design, and interpretation of complex biological findings.
  • Exceptional scientific reasoning and critical thinking, with the ability to formulate and evaluate mechanistic hypotheses.
  • Experience analyzing experimental, physiological, or clinical research data.
  • Working knowledge of Python or R for scientific data analysis.
  • Familiarity with AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Codex, or willingness to learn and incorporate them into research workflows.

Nice To Haves

  • Research experience spanning multiple physiological systems.
  • Experience with human clinical studies, longitudinal datasets, or physiological intervention studies.
  • Experience integrating molecular, physiological, and clinical data.
  • Familiarity with computational or quantitative approaches to studying human physiology.

Responsibilities

  • Develop challenging, biologically meaningful research problems to evaluate AI agents’ scientific reasoning and problem-solving abilities.
  • Identify, evaluate, and analyze datasets from published research, clinical studies, and physiological experiments to establish reliable ground truth.
  • Assess experimental designs, biological mechanisms, data quality, and alternative explanations to ensure scientific rigor.
  • Investigate where AI systems succeed or fail at interpreting biological evidence, connecting physiological mechanisms, and drawing scientifically defensible conclusions.
  • Collaborate with scientists and engineers, using AI-assisted research and coding tools to accelerate scientific analysis and benchmark development.

Benefits

  • Health, dental, and vision coverage: 100% covered for the employee and 50% for dependents.
  • 401(k) plan with no match.
  • 12 days of PTO to start, with more as the employee is promoted.
  • Four-week ramp paid at full OTE.
  • Full OTE pay when quota cannot fairly apply, such as when a new project is starting, the platform is down, or the employee is assigned a special project.
  • Monthly advance of 60% of OTE for international contractors, never clawed back.
  • Catered lunch and dinner and unlimited snacks at the San Francisco office.
  • Company outings most months and team off-sites.
  • Visa sponsorship for H-1B (new and transfers), O-1, and TN, and support for STEM OPT.
