AI Biologist - Genetic Medicines

LatchBio•San Francisco, CA
•$140,000 - $180,000•Remote

About The Position

Latch builds scientific benchmarks for AI agents across biology and works with frontier labs and pharmaceutical companies to assess agents on real biological workflows. The AI Biologist - Genetic Medicines will contribute to technical approaches for evaluating agent reasoning across the genetic medicines pipeline, including gene therapy, gene editing, and RNA therapeutics, from target validation and drug discovery through clinical development. The role works with software engineers and scientists to build datasets and AI-agent tasks across the end-to-end pipeline. This includes designing realistic program case studies; evaluating pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic, immunogenicity, and GLP toxicology findings; reconstructing program go/no-go decisions from multiple data sources; and reviewing agent outputs for scientifically defensible reasoning. The role also involves calibrating agent confidence when preclinical evidence is incomplete or conflicting. The position may begin on the team that best fits the employee’s expertise, with opportunities to move across teams based on demonstrated results. The company offers full-time W-2 employment in the US and contractor arrangements outside the US. The role can be fully remote, though working onsite at the company’s Mission Bay waterfront office in San Francisco is preferred.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree (MS, PhD, or PharmD) in molecular biology, genetics, gene therapy, a related biomedical field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience in discovery or development of gene therapy, gene editing, or RNA therapeutics (ASO, siRNA, or mRNA).
  • Direct experience with drug design, drug screening, delivery optimization, or IND-enabling study design in at least one genetic medicine modality.
  • Experience interpreting on-target and off-target editing data, biodistribution, immunogenicity, and GLP toxicology to inform dose selection and risk assessment.
  • Experience evaluating potency, specificity, and developability trade-offs across vector, construct, or oligonucleotide candidates.
  • Strong scientific writing skills and the ability to produce clear, evidence-supported rationales for drug development decisions.
  • Proficiency in using AI agents and judgment to identify model reasoning that is technically correct but pharmacologically or practically unsound.
  • Comfort operating amid uncertainty and proactively flagging gaps in data or instructions.
  • High agency and initiative.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with IND-enabling regulatory requirements and the nonclinical data package expected by the FDA or EMA.

Responsibilities

  • Develop technical approaches for evaluating AI-agent reasoning across the genetic medicines pipeline, from target validation and drug discovery to clinical development.
  • Design realistic program case studies spanning target validation, drug design and screening, chemistry optimization, candidate nomination, and IND-enabling studies across genetic medicine modalities.
  • Evaluate PK/PD, immunogenicity, and GLP toxicology findings across modalities and development stages.
  • Reconstruct program go/no-go decisions from data drawn from multiple sources.
  • Review and stress-test AI-agent outputs for scientific soundness, identifying reasoning that may be technically correct but indefensible in a program review.
  • Calibrate AI-agent confidence on preclinical data when signals are incomplete or conflicting rather than forcing a binary conclusion.
  • Produce clear, evidence-supported rationales for drug development decisions.
  • Flag gaps in data or instructions and exercise initiative while working amid uncertainty.

Benefits

  • In the US, health, dental, and vision coverage is 100% covered for the employee and 50% covered for dependents.
  • 401(k) plan with no match.
  • PTO starting at 12 days, with more as the employee is promoted.
  • First four weeks of ramp are paid at full OTE while training.
  • Full OTE is paid when quota cannot fairly apply, such as when a new project is starting, the platform is down, or the employee is assigned to a special project.
  • Monthly advance of 60% of OTE for contractors outside the US; the advance is never clawed back.
  • Company outings most months and team off-sites.
  • Onsite office offers catered lunch and dinner and unlimited snacks.
