The Artificial Intelligence Associate program at Fermilab offers technically skilled researchers the opportunity to develop and apply AI/ML techniques to experimental datasets and designs, theoretical models, and national laboratory operations. Associates work on several complementary projects spanning theory, particle physics, cosmology, experiment operations, and laboratory functions. The position is typically a one-year term, with the possibility of extension and potential promotion to an AI researcher staff position. Day-to-day work includes developing and applying AI/ML algorithms for research and operations projects, identifying and refining project solutions, providing analytics, and regularly reporting analysis and progress. The associate may perform other duties assigned by a supervisor and must follow applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations and practices. This is an onsite role based at Fermilab’s Batavia office; the work arrangement may change based on business needs. Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae, one letter of support, and a research statement of no more than two pages describing a previous research project, its relevance, and the applicant’s role. Applications are due by September 30, 2026, for formal consideration. Any AI-generated applications will be rejected automatically. Employment offers are contingent on successful background checks and drug screening. New employees must obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification credential. Certain employees and researchers are also subject to restrictions concerning foreign government-sponsored or affiliated activities.
