About The Position

The Youth Mentor provides positive guidance, supervision, and support to youth ages 11–18 participating in NNCC’s after-school programs. Working as part of the Youth Services team, the Youth Mentor helps facilitate educational, recreational, and enrichment activities while creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment that promotes positive relationships, personal growth, and youth development.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED/HiSET, or equivalent.
  • Interest in working with adolescents and supporting positive youth development.
  • Ability to establish appropriate, supportive relationships with youth ages 11–18.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
  • Dependable, patient, energetic, and able to serve as a positive role model.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to conflicts, behavioral concerns, and emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and participant confidentiality.
  • Ability to successfully complete required background checks and program training.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with youth in an after-school, educational, recreational, mentoring, camp, or community-based setting.
  • Coursework or degree in Education, Human Services, Social Work, Youth Development, or a related field.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Bilingual and bicultural (English/Spanish).

Responsibilities

  • Build positive, supportive, and professional relationships with participating youth.
  • Serve as a positive role model and encourage responsibility, confidence, teamwork, and respectful behavior.
  • Provide active supervision to ensure the safety and well-being of participants.
  • Encourage youth participation and help create an environment where young people feel welcomed, respected, and included.
  • Support youth in resolving conflicts and making positive choices, with assistance from program leadership when appropriate.
  • Recognize participant concerns and communicate behavioral, safety, or other significant issues to appropriate program staff.
  • Assist with planning and implementing after-school programs, clubs, and enrichment activities for youth ages 11–18.
  • Help facilitate lesson plans and structured educational, recreational, social, and skill-building activities.
  • Organize and lead small- and large-group activities.
  • Encourage youth participation in activities that promote academic success, leadership, creativity, health, and personal development.
  • Assist with special events, field trips, community activities, and other program initiatives.
  • Maintain consistent program schedules and support smooth transitions between activities.
  • Follow and enforce all program safety rules, emergency procedures, and participant supervision requirements.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records, activity logs, incident reports, and other required program documentation.
  • Maintain awareness of participant dietary restrictions and allergies and follow established procedures when distributing meals and snacks.
  • Help maintain clean, organized, and safe program spaces.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
