Aeromechanics Engineer - LibertyWorks

Rolls-Royce•Indianapolis, IN
•$82,882 - $87,026•Onsite

About The Position

Rolls-Royce LibertyWorks is hiring an Aeromechanics Engineer through its Launch graduate pathway, which supports graduates with on-the-job learning and career progression. The role supports a broad portfolio of defense programs and evaluates turbomachinery subsystems, including fan, compressor, and/or turbine gas paths. Work includes assessing fluid-structure interaction and resulting vibration of airfoils and other components through computational and experimental methods for preliminary design, engine certification, optimization, cost reduction, and failure investigations. The engineer will develop analytical solutions for customer issues involving high-cycle fatigue, flutter, damping, and mistuning on new and fielded products. The role involves aeromechanics analysis, testing, method validation, certification planning, collaboration with technical teams, and communicating technical and business results. The position is permanent and located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Applicants must be U.S. citizens able to obtain and maintain a high-level security clearance and must be graduating between December 2026 and August 2027 in the specified graduation periods.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in engineering with an academic focus related to aeromechanics.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a high-level security clearance.
  • Must be graduating in December 2026, June 2027, or August 2027.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong interest in turbomachinery aeromechanics and willingness to develop new skills.
  • Previous experience with computational fluid dynamics, with interest in unsteady simulations involving fluid-structure interaction.
  • Previous experience collecting and analyzing aeromechanics-related data, such as strain-gage data and blade tip timing, light probe, or NSMS data.
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis, specifically modal analysis.
  • Programming skills such as Bash, Fortran, MATLAB, and Python.
  • Knowledge of ongoing academic research related to aeroelasticity in gas turbines.

Responsibilities

  • Run aeromechanics analyses using in-house CFD to evaluate forced response, flutter, rotating stall, and other aeroelastic phenomena.
  • Evaluate mistuning and nonlinear dynamics.
  • Perform computer programming as needed to improve work efficiency.
  • Use reduced-order models to evaluate inlet distortion, mistuning, intake acoustics, and other parameters affecting aeromechanics problems.
  • Plan testing and post-process results to support aeromechanics testing and validate analytical methods.
  • Interpret test data to identify and explain component vibration.
  • Identify aeromechanics requirements for new product introductions and work with subject matter experts to establish certification strategies.
  • Collaborate with local and global aeromechanics teams to develop rules, tools, methods, and people.
  • Collaborate with aerodynamic designers, mechanical designers, stress analysts, and test engineers on new engine designs and in-service vibration investigations.
  • Communicate technical and business results through reports and presentations to senior engineers within and outside Rolls-Royce.
