About The Position

This is a unique opportunity to work in an academic and clinically busy orthopedic practice with a focus on Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery and Peripheral Nerve Surgery in one of the premier hand and upper extremity centers in the United States. The position will be a full-time exempt (non-hourly) Instructor -Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner position in the Department of Orthopedics, University of Colorado. The position is not eligible for tenure

Requirements

  • Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
  • State of Colorado Certified Physician Assistant or Inclusion on the State of Colorado Advanced Practice Registry as an Advance Practice Nurse
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants or certification by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners
  • CPR Certified

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified above.
  • Previous experience with complex wound closure and subcuticular suturing.
  • Previous experience assisting with complex upper limb and peripheral nerve surgical cases
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification; certification pending, as documented by temporary certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Performs thorough history and physical examinations on assigned patients; assesses and treats acute/chronic medical problems (focusing on the musculoskeletal and peripheral nervous system) and provides direct patient care to a specified patient population. Write prescriptions for medications, PT, OT, imaging studies, neurodiagnostic testing, and DME as needed.
  • Assists in providing pre-op, intra-op and post-op care; writes appropriate orders, including those for narcotics and other scheduled drugs. There will be casting, splinting, and dressing/wound care required.
  • Assist orthopedic surgeon in operating room setting. Will be required to be proficient at multi-layer tissue closure and to assist in complex surgical cases. Significant experience with suturing techniques such as subcuticular and complex wound closure is required.
  • Occasionally provide fracture reductions in ER or office as needed, but not conscious sedation. Perform minor procedures such as aspirations, injections, superficial pin removal, superficial abscess drainage, and dressing changes.
  • Must become proficient in timely documentation and use the current Electronic Medical Record system.
  • Notifies attending physician on call, house physician on call, or supervising physician regarding any unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct / urgent physician consultation.
  • Completes appropriate patient hand-off and transfers as clinically indicated.
  • Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
  • Coordinates the activities of patient care and support staff within the clinic. Work with the team to ensure smooth patient flow in the clinic.
  • Writes timely progress notes on patients' office and hospital charts indicating patient status and treatment procedures performed; maintains other records as required.
  • Completes patient health-related forms in a timely manner in collaboration with the supervising clinician such as FMLA, work / activity restriction forms, insurance forms, and school notes.
  • Provides health education to patients and families; may train and supervise medical students, residents, fellows, Physician Assistant students, and other health professional students, engaged in specific clinical activities.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops. Participate (attend, give talks, help organize) in educational programs.
  • Assists in community outreach events including giving educational talks, organizing, planning, and attending.
  • Helps develop written educational materials and treatment protocols for specific conditions and post-operative care.
  • Assists in preparing and / or giving powerpoint and poster presentations for educational purposes at institutional, local and national meetings.
  • Participates in clinical research related to specific conditions and assist in preparation of manuscripts for publication. Maintains current institutional compliance for participation in all clinical research.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
