About The Position

The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Colorado at CU Anschutz has a full-time clinical faculty position available for an Advanced Practice Provider. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will be a clinical faculty member, entering at the level of Instructor. This position encompasses inpatient medical care services for patients suffering from a wide range of neurosurgical disorders (including spine, cranial, endovascular, vascular and stereo-tactical conditions). As a faculty member of CU Anschutz, opportunities for professional development may include precept of medical learners, education of nursing and medical staff, participation in quality and safety improvement projects, clinical research projects, and mentoring residents and junior Advanced Practice Providers. The APP position includes management of inpatient neurosurgical patients with neurosurgical pathologies, perioperative management, and first assist in surgical cases, as appropriate. The APP will work closely with other members of the Neurosurgery service including APPs, surgical faculty, and residents. This service is heavily weighted towards inpatient responsibilities. The ideal candidate will have a high degree of organization, but an equally strong flexibility and skill in dealing with rapidly changing clinical situations and daily schedules. This position will work with all neurosurgical specialties to provide inpatient care for a variety of neurosurgical patients. This team functions as a single cohesive unit with one APP responsible for inpatient management and the others predominantly in outpatient roles.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a master’s degree in advanced Practice Nursing (Acute Care NP) or a graduate of an accredited program in Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Current active license to practice in the state of Colorado as an Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant. Prescriptive authority is required.
  • Certified as a Nurse Practitioner/or as a Physician Assistant by a national professional organization.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts comprehensive or episodic health history and physical assessment of patients with acute, chronic and/or potential Neurosurgical problems, while properly documenting information. Leading into assessing psychosocial, cognitive, developmental and functional assets to assist in implementing care plans.
  • Prescribes medications and monitors patient response, adjusting as appropriate as an APP per written physician practice agreement or protocols.
  • Analyze clinic practice and identifies opportunities to increase effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Meets regularly with appropriate physicians; works collaboratively to affect programmatic changes.
  • First Assist on neurosurgical surgeries (as appropriate), and other patient care related duties that would lead to a neurosurgical operation on a patient, including physical exams, ordering labs, and diagnostic tests or studies.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of legal issues, including patient confidentiality and risk management, in all aspects of patient care and unit functioning.
  • Attending weekly specialty conferences as permissible with clinical schedule; additionally attending conferences, board review courses, practical procedure boot camps and other professional development both in-state and out of state
