About The Position

The Advanced Manufacturing Engineer designs precision assembly and measurement processes for Apple products and researches and develops technologies to address complex assembly and automation problems that affect product quality and delivery. The role designs, implements, and scales automated and semi-automated solutions using sound engineering principles, and develops new or improved processes through theoretical and practical engineering. The engineer keeps abreast of technical trends and applies relevant developments to assignments. This position serves as the technical leader for assigned projects and provides direction and mentorship to machine and automation suppliers and contract manufacturers. It coordinates cross-functional reviews of machine requirements, design, qualification, and capability; prepares RFQs and RFPs documenting equipment design requirements, schedules, documentation, and qualification and acceptance criteria; and engages suppliers in equipment design reviews and proposals. The engineer travels to suppliers and contract manufacturers for equipment bring-up, qualification, acceptance testing, and support during build events. The role drives machine qualification, including correlation, process capability (Cp/Cpk), and gage repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R); resolves machine issues and conducts failure analysis with suppliers and contract manufacturers; runs experiments to establish machine capability; and prepares data-analysis reports for multifunctional teams. Responsibilities span design for manufacturability, product engineering from concept through end of life, process engineering, production support, and failure and data analysis. The work includes technically complex testing and evaluation of products, recommendations for design changes and assembly standards, and application of design of experiments and Six Sigma statistical analysis. International travel of up to 40% is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or equivalent.
  • At least 3 years in an engineering role.
  • Experience with automation equipment used for component alignment, assembly, and/or measurement.
  • Proven track record of cost reduction, project management, and engineering design.
  • Ability to travel internationally up to 40%.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T principles is favorable.
  • Knowledge of optics principles related to CCD cameras, 2D and 1D lasers, and their use in positioning and critical-alignment machines.
  • Working knowledge of robotics (6-axis and/or SCARA), pneumatics, servo motors, motion controllers, PLCs, and PC-based control systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) desired.
  • New product introduction and Manufacturing Operations experience desired.
  • NX, SolidWorks CAD, or ProE experience is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of liquid adhesives, PSAs, and VHBs is a plus.
  • JMP, Minitab, and Six Sigma experience preferred.
