About The Position

Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island is seeking an Adult Education Instructor (ESL) to teach English to adult learners from diverse backgrounds. The organization has a passionate and dedicated team of diverse professionals, striving to create a welcoming environment and empower the most vulnerable. For over 100 years, Dorcas International has provided wraparound services to help clients overcome educational, cultural, economic, and language barriers. As a non-profit 501(c)(3), they offer adult education, language learning, job training, employment services, citizenship and immigration services, refugee resettlement, and clothing and household needs. The Adult Education Instructor (ESL) will be responsible for teaching multi-level classes, planning lessons based on the learning needs of culturally diverse students, and maintaining a classroom environment conducive to learning. The role involves supporting students with instruction and program services, monitoring and recording student attendance and academic progress, making routine decisions regarding class operations, meeting with a supervisor, and collaborating with program staff.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree
  • TESOL training or a comparable certification for teaching ESL classes is required
  • Subject matter expertise/experience in specific content areas
  • Ability to relate well to groups of students of differing abilities and backgrounds
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and through correct written grammar
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues individually and as a team
  • Ability to build a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the interests of students
  • Ability to engage learners with creative and stimulating instruction

Nice To Haves

  • At least two years of teaching experience with adult learners is preferred
  • Bilingual ability preferred
