About The Position

The Integrated Social Sciences (ISS) program is seeking an Academic Services Director (ASD) to lead its operations. ISS is a fee-based, online bachelor’s degree completion program offered by the College of Arts and Sciences in partnership with Continuum College. It aims to expand access to a high-quality UW baccalaureate degree for students in Washington and beyond. The program is delivered online and caters to adult learners, offering an integrated and interdisciplinary pathway across the social sciences. ISS focuses on developing students' intellectual capabilities and skills in communication, analytical thinking, and public scholarship. The program employs faculty and academic advisers who work closely together to support students. ISS uses a proactive and individualized advising model tailored to the needs of adult students, many of whom are working professionals with families. Advisers foster relationships and a sense of community remotely in the online environment. ISS academic counselors operate within an integrated educational team model, requiring daily communication and cooperation between staff and faculty.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in social sciences, humanities, or related field.
  • Two years of academic advising, teaching, administrative and/or supervisory experience in a higher education setting.

  • Familiarity with University of Washington student services and related technologies and information systems.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and assess the management and implementation of the ISS bachelor’s degree completion program.
  • Provide strategic leadership for the long-term management and day-to-day administration of the program.
  • Develop and manage an annual operating budget.
  • Make recommendations regarding course fee rates to maintain fiscal health and affordability.
  • Develop faculty hiring plans and participate in hiring processes.
  • Communicate with department chairs to recruit new instructors and introduce new courses.
  • Ensure the accuracy and usefulness of program information disseminated through various channels.
  • Oversee and coordinate on- and off-campus recruitment for ISS academic programs.
  • Coordinate the annual curriculum planning process.
  • Serve on the ISS program Curriculum Committee and other program committees as necessary.
  • Coordinate the submission of new course proposals and revisions to the College Curriculum Committee.
  • Advise faculty on course change procedures and proposal content.
  • Monitor the progress of curriculum proposals and maintain records of committee decisions.
  • Participate in the maintenance and revision of core courses.
  • Manage the construction of the annual ISS major course schedule.
  • Maintain communication with faculty teaching ISS courses and recruit new instructors.
  • Ensure accuracy of Time Schedule listings and proper functioning of registration and billing.
  • Oversee the dissemination of schedule and registration information to students.
  • Perform equivalency evaluations of coursework completed outside UW.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate three professional staff academic advisers.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate one professional staff counseling services coordinator who functions as admissions and outreach adviser.
  • Develop professional staff position descriptions and ensure compliance in hiring materials.
  • Determine efficient use of advising resources in managing workflow.
  • Write annual performance evaluations for merit increases, offer feedback and support to advising staff, and administer corrective action when necessary.
  • Produce statements to support merit increases, reappointments, and promotions of ISS core faculty.
  • Oversee services for students including program admission, academic advising, assistance with financial aid, and career planning.
  • Advise faculty and divisional dean on student services matters, and Department, College, and University policies.
  • Ensure implementation of policy decisions affecting the undergraduate program and student services office.
  • Authorize routine waivers and grant exceptions to undergraduate requirements.
  • Serve as liaison with other departments and the Undergraduate Advising Center.
  • Represent the program to other units on campus and to the public.
