The Elementary and Bilingual Education department within the Division of the College of Education prepares educators for Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through eighth grade. It offers a multitude of subject credentials, bilingual authorization, and master’s programs. The College of Education is home to more than 1200 credential and graduate students with its work focusing on closing the opportunity gap. The College’s impact is notable given the fact that we credential the largest number of teachers of any public institution in the state of California and have the largest Ed.D. program in the CSU system. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as the Admission and Academic Advisor (Student Services Professional II). Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public administration, business administration or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or a related field.
  • A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
  • Additional specialized and relevant experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational management, research, and interview techniques.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations, obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews, and advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters.
  • Ability to reason logically and use initiative in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
  • Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and of the overall organization.
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment.
  • Must be able to provide support for College of Education Credential and Commencement ceremonies.
  • Ability to lift and carry program materials (up to 25 pounds) with or without accommodation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working within educator preparation programs or supporting students pursuing careers in education, including knowledge of undergraduate-to-credential pathways and graduate pathways.
  • Familiarity with undergraduate and graduate advising, transfer articulation, and subject matter preparation as they relate to teacher preparation programs.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with CMS/People Soft and or similar systems.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with contents of university catalog and other publications pertaining to preparation for and admission to the teacher credential programs including integrated programs and traditional pathways.
  • Familiarity with computer software programs to develop workshops, correspond, and utilize a student tracking database.
  • Previous experience promoting and/or advising for teacher preparation programs.
  • Ability to compile, collect, and analyze data for program review and annual reports.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the admission process, procedures, and student advising for credential and graduate programs in the Elementary and Bilingual Education Department.
  • Provides information on admission requirements, program completion requirements, academic notice and stop-out policies for credential and master’s students.
  • Utilizes university and department policies and procedures to assist students with the selection of classes and transcript evaluation.
  • Monitors graduate writing requirement completion.
  • Reviews and recommends approval of graduation checks.
  • Coordinates outreach and recruitment activities, with special effort to recruit students from underrepresented populations.
  • Coordinates program overviews and new student orientation.
  • Coordinates admission interviews and assigns students to cohorts.
  • Maintains and updates program websites and social media content.
  • Participates in applicable meetings, committees, and trainings.
  • Collaborates with student teaching placement coordinator for incoming and re-entry students.
  • Collaborates with department chair on content development and maintains updates to all student candidate handbooks and forms.
  • Collaborates with Center for Careers in Teaching to ensure program updates are communicated to future teachers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
