About The Position

The College of Arts and Letters (CAL) at San Diego State University is seeking a General Academic Advisor to serve its undergraduate students. The General Academic Advisor will support a caseload of students by providing academic advising, student support, and programming that enhances student achievement and timely graduation.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field.
  • Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.
  • A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
  • Master's degree in student personnel, higher education/student affairs, counseling or related field.
  • Experience advising diverse groups of students and student organizations along the academic spectrum including, promising students, students in the middle or high achieving students.
  • Knowledge of a variety of academic disciplines in terms of course requirements and career paths.
  • Experience utilizing SDSU Navigate advising (EAB) and similar academic advising tools.
  • Two years of experience in interpreting and explaining academic policies governing public or private university admissions.
  • Two years of experience working in a college or university admissions, advising, evaluations, registrar or other student service-related office.
  • Must currently be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
  • Must provide documents that demonstrate a person's identity and authorization to work in the United States, which are consistent with the provisions of the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
  • Must satisfactorily complete a background check (including a criminal records check).

Responsibilities

  • Provide holistic academic guidance, student success and degree-planning support, policy interpretation, milestone outreach, retention and graduation intervention, inter-department communication, petition coordination, advising material development, and data-informed support for students and faculty.
  • Promote CAL majors, minors, and engagement opportunities by conducting outreach to undeclared and admitted students, collaborating Undeclared Advisers, and responding to student, parent, and visitor inquiries.
  • Provide logistical and coordination support for special events ranging from venue setup, program planning, event materials creation, and department representation at Explore SDSU Open House and the CAL Student Success Workshops series.
