About The Position

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Office of Plant Industry Services seeks a qualified, customer service-orientated Administrative Assistant for its Seed Laboratory in Richmond, Virginia. The successful candidate will provide efficient and effective administrative support for the Seed Lab’s testing program and for the enforcement of the Virginia Seed Law. Duties include supporting the Seed Laboratory Manager and staff; overseeing the seed sample analysis database; managing correspondence and documents; maintaining office files; handling and tracking payments for services, billing statements, and collection of fees; and assisting clients with information about laboratory results. The position is based in a laboratory environment and involves handling chemically treated peanuts and seed samples.

Requirements

  • Ability to interpret policies and procedures relating to subject area
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel, Oracle, Outlook, Internet
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public by telephone and in person
  • Thorough knowledge of business English, spelling, and basic math
  • Ability to operate various automated office equipment
  • Skilled in oral and written communication, typing, word processing, data entry and filing
  • Ability to work without direct supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to meet and communicate with fellow employees and the public in a professional and courteous manner
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows applications
  • Proficient with data entry and keyboarding skills
  • H.S Diploma/GED required

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to train on the LabLynx database
  • Current or recent experience supporting regulatory or compliance programs
  • Experience supporting staff working in a laboratory or state government office
  • Revenue management experience or billing and bill tracking experience preferred
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience
