About The Position

Trocaire College invites applications for part-time adjunct faculty to teach General Chemistry I and General Chemistry II lecture and laboratory courses within the Department of Health, Sciences, and General Education. These courses are taught in person on the Trocaire College campus in Buffalo, New York. We seek individuals with strong academic and/or professional experience in chemistry who can provide engaging, student-centered instruction and contribute to the College's Mercy mission. Course assignments may include General Chemistry I and/or General Chemistry II lecture and laboratory sections. Applicants should be prepared to teach foundational chemistry concepts and support students in developing the quantitative, analytical, and laboratory skills necessary for success in science and health-related fields. This is a pooled posting, and positions are filled on an as-needed basis.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or higher in Chemistry or a closely related discipline with graduate-level coursework in chemistry.
  • Academic, teaching, laboratory, and/or professional experience directly related to chemistry.
  • Knowledge of appropriate chemical laboratory safety procedures and practices.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, time-management, and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to the Mercy mission of an opportunity college and a desire to support diverse and inclusive learning environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching General Chemistry I and/or General Chemistry II at the post-secondary level.
  • Experience working with students pursuing health science, allied health, or other STEM-related programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to support students with varying levels of preparation in chemistry and mathematics.
  • Online or technology-enhanced teaching experience.
  • Experience using learning management systems such as Blackboard, Canvas, or Moodle and other instructional technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned General Chemistry lecture and/or laboratory courses in accordance with College-defined course learning objectives and specified course materials.
  • Deliver instruction in foundational chemistry topics, which may include atomic and molecular structure, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, chemical reactions, thermochemistry, gases, solutions, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, and other topics appropriate to the General Chemistry I and II sequence.
  • Provide laboratory instruction that reinforces course concepts and develops students' skills in scientific measurement, data collection and analysis, experimental procedures, and scientific communication.
  • Promote and model appropriate laboratory safety practices, including the proper handling, use, and disposal of chemicals and laboratory materials.
  • Develop course content, assignments, laboratory activities, and assessments that permit measurement of student performance relative to established course learning objectives.
  • Maintain and contribute to an inclusive, supportive, and collaborative learning environment.
  • Employ the College's learning management system (LMS) and adhere to good instructional practices, including maintaining a published syllabus, communicating course expectations, holding office hours, and regularly reporting grades.
  • Submit attendance and midterm/final grades into the student information system at required timeframes.
  • Provide timely responses and academic support to guide student learning and success throughout the semester via email, office hours, and/or the Trocaire College LMS.
  • Track and report student learning outcome assessment data as assigned.
  • Build relationships with students, identify solutions to learning challenges, and promote student accountability and success.
