About The Position

Abilene Christian University (ACU) is seeking qualified individuals to serve as Adjunct Dissertation Chairs and Committee Members for their EdD-Educational Leadership program. ACU is affiliated with the fellowship of the Church of Christ, and all applicants must be professing Christians willing to support the university's Christian mission and purpose. This role involves providing high-quality instruction, direction, and mentorship to students throughout the dissertation process, including managing committees and ensuring the production of high-quality research. The position requires adherence to university policies and active participation in student defense processes.

Requirements

  • Professional Doctorate degree from an accredited institution in Education, Leadership, or related fields.
  • Experience serving as both a dissertation chair and a member of dissertation committees.
  • Prior experience as a chair/supervisor/mentor overseeing doctoral students.
  • Experience in research design/methodology.
  • Evidence of quality research completed in the last ten years (e.g., publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations, program evaluation reports, etc.).
  • Computer literate in software and internet-based applications.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to view and manage roles and responsibilities in relation to larger mission, goals, and perspective of the University.
  • Collaborative nature, with the ability to build consensus.
  • Outstanding organizational and project management skills.
  • Self-motivated and solves problems, asking for input and initiating solutions as appropriate and reasonable.
  • Capacity to quickly learn new software applications.
  • Willingness to receive additional training and/or faculty mentoring.
  • Professing Christians willing to support the Christian mission and purpose of the university.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of three years of postdoctoral experience in higher education.
  • Online instructional experience and working in a virtual team environment.
  • Service as dissertation chair or co-chair for students who have successfully completed their dissertations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality instruction, direction, and mentorship for assigned students throughout all phases of the dissertation process.
  • Manage and supervise the committee members and methodologists of assigned students (in the Chair role).
  • Provide timely and supportive mentoring throughout the student’s process of developing, researching, writing, and revising the dissertation.
  • Direct and instruct the student with the goal of producing high-quality research.
  • Participate in the Defense process of a student’s Prospectus and offer timely and constructive feedback for revisions.

  • Collaborate with the student’s full committee, following the lead of the dissertation committee chair.
  • Comply with all pertinent policies and procedures outlined in Abilene Christian University’s Dissertation Handbook, Faculty Guidelines, and those specified by ACU’s College of Leadership and Professional Studies.
  • Facilitate the successful completion of all IRB protocols and ensure current IRB training.
  • Guide the student through the development of the Problem of Practice, Concept Proposal, the Prospectus, and the completed dissertation manuscript.
  • Advise the student regarding necessary changes to the dissertation content and research.
  • Supervise the completion of data collection and advise the student regarding necessary changes to collection methods and/or processes.
  • Provide feedback to the Dissertation Manager regarding any student and/or committee member challenges, issues, or problems.
  • Make recommendations to students regarding the utilization of university resources, as needed.
