The Addictions Counselor provides educational and supportive services to patients and families addressing addiction and recovery. The role may include completing substance use assessments and consulting with a master’s-level professional when assessment criteria indicate a substance use diagnosis. The counselor provides individual, group, and family counseling; participates in assessment and treatment planning as appropriate; and documents services, significant behavior, and incidents. The counselor serves as a role model and source of feedback, intervenes in crises using approved Ukeru practices, and provides structure, discipline, and security according to each client’s plan of care. For Seeking Safety family referrals, the counselor is expected to work with the family in the home. The role also involves communicating treatment needs to staff, involving staff in appropriate activities when possible, maintaining a patient referral log, and potentially assisting with inpatient program admissions. The counselor reports critical incidents to DCF verbally within 12 hours and in writing within 24 hours, and reports unusual incidents through appropriate risk-management, clinical, and safety channels. The counselor follows Saint Francis Ministries policies and procedures, applicable accreditation and licensure standards, and relevant federal, state, and local requirements and contract terms. The role protects clients’ rights, ensures clients receive their rights and that signed copies are maintained in resident files, and follows safety procedures.
