Highland Community Center is on the lookout for enthusiastic and caring individuals to join our Adaptive Recreation team! As a Program Staff member, you’ll lead exciting classes and activities designed for adults with intellectual disabilities — think art, dance, BINGO, sports, fitness, crafts, and unforgettable special events. You’ll supervise and engage with groups of 10–30 participants, making sure everyone is safe, included, and having a great time. Requirements

  • Applicant has a thorough knowledge of programs and services to which they are assigned.
  • Interpersonal contacts will extend beyond the work group to patrons and the public.
  • Public contact is significant and ongoing, working relationships are established with patrons.
  • Staff must be able to collaborate and communicate with other staff members.
  • Will work with multiple participants within various programs.
  • Preferred High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • At least 1-year prior work experience or education in recreation or a related field.
  • Prior experience with children or adults living with intellectual disabilities.
  • First Aid, CPR, or other specialized training or experience will be required.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate all aspects of recreation within assigned program for participants
  • Responsible for assigned class activities
  • Coaches
  • Performs data entry for program management
  • Leads volunteers
  • Teaches (small classes)
  • Creates displays
  • Adapt course material to participant ability level
  • Accountable for participants during programs
  • Provide assistance feeding participants
  • Does word processing
  • Program preparation and set-up; explains program requirements.
  • Operates specialized equipment.
  • Applies Basic first aid when necessary
  • Assists with set up, maintenance, and/or operation of data management processes.
  • Works in more than one assignment in the Recreation Division.
