About The Position

The Accounting Manager oversees day-to-day accounting operations across multiple entities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, monthly close activities, cash management, and financial reporting support. Reporting to the Controller, this role helps ensure accurate and timely accounting operations within a complex multi-entity structure that includes nonprofit and other for-profit entities. This role manages core accounting processes, supports staff oversight and accountability, and partners cross-functionally to strengthen financial operations, improve processes, and maintain strong internal controls. This role has supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and core accounting principles.
  • Experience managing AP/AR workflows, close processes, and operational accounting functions.
  • Proficiency in Excel (lookups, pivots) and comfort with accounting systems, including NetSuite, Expensify, and Salesforce.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Clear communicator who collaborates effectively with cross-functional partners.
  • Collaborative, continuous-improvement mindset aligned with the organizational mission.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least five years of progressive accounting experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with nonprofit accounting concepts, including grants and mission-related investments.
  • Experience supervising accounting staff, vendors, or outsourced accounting support.
  • Public accounting and/or multi-entity accounting experience.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, expense management, and cash activity across multiple entities.
  • Review and approve invoices, expense reports, grant disbursements, and payment processing workflows.
  • Supervise the finance assistant and establish clear expectations and accountability.
  • Ensure timely completion of recurring accounting processes and adherence to internal controls.
  • Partner with the Controller to maintain efficient accounting operations within a complex multi-entity environment.
  • Support payroll accounting activities, including accruals, tax-related entries, and payroll journal entries.
  • Manage monthly and annual close processes, including reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and balance sheet reviews.
  • Prepare entity-level financial statements and support consolidations and intercompany reconciliations.
  • Maintain fixed asset and depreciation schedules.
  • Identify and resolve accounting discrepancies and process issues proactively.
  • Record and track grants payable, grant expense recognition, and related accounting activities.
  • Support accounting and operational processes related to grants, loans, guarantees, and mission-related investments.
  • Coordinate with program and investment teams to ensure accurate documentation and financial tracking.
  • Facilitate operational processes for investment activities, including capital calls and supporting documentation.
  • Prepare audit schedules and coordinate requests with external auditors.
  • Support tax filings (e.g., 990-PF/990 support, UBIT considerations, and for-profit returns) in partnership with external preparers.
  • Help maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and supporting documentation.
  • Identify and implement process improvements that increase accuracy, scalability, and efficiency.
  • Serve as a power user in accounting and operational systems, including NetSuite, Expensify, Salesforce, expense management, and banking tools.
  • Support workflow improvements that strengthen controls and streamline accounting operations.
