About The Position

As a Senior Consultant on Deloitte’s General Business Finance Data Analytics & Insights team, you will design, build, and maintain automations that streamline accounting and finance processes for state, local, and higher education clients. You will work with client finance teams and Deloitte consultants to turn manual, error-prone work into reliable, auditable, and scalable workflows. You will also develop data pipelines, reporting tools, and control checks that help clients close faster, reconcile confidently, and remain audit-ready. The role combines finance process knowledge with data engineering, analytics, and visualization. It supports reporting and decision-making across planning, performance management, and business operations. Work includes evaluating processes for automation opportunities, implementing solutions, documenting them for independent operation and audit, and training client staff before transitioning ownership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, information systems, computer science, data analytics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in one or more of the following: building finance or accounting automations using RPA, AI, or other workflow tools; developing query-based reporting, data validation, or ETL processes; scripting for financial data analysis; or implementing ERP, reporting, or data integration solutions for finance teams.
  • Working knowledge of accounting fundamentals, including general ledger structures, reconciliations, journal entries, and chart of accounts.
  • Hands-on experience with automation and intelligence platforms or business intelligence tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar.
  • Understanding of internal controls, COSO principles, and audit requirements, including designing automations that produce audit-ready evidence.
  • Familiarity with data governance, information security, and access controls in regulated environments.
  • Ability to obtain or maintain security clearances required for the client and/or project.
  • Ability to work independently across multiple client environments, manage competing priorities, and travel as needed.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship now or at any time in the future.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, communicate effectively in writing and verbally, maintain attention to detail and quality, build professional relationships, manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, and meet deadlines.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with fund accounting and GASB or FASB standards.
  • Strong SQL skills, including joins, aggregations, window functions, and query optimization, with experience working against relational databases.
  • Experience with ERP systems such as SAP, Workday, Oracle, or PeopleSoft, or systems such as Workiva, BlackLine, OneStream, or Anaplan.
  • Experience supporting federal, state, or local government, or higher education clients.
  • Experience with data warehousing or lakehouse architecture.
  • Experience with ETL orchestration tools.
  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments.
  • Experience using Git-based version control and continuous integration/continuous deployment pipelines.
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Accounting Information Systems, Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, or Statistics.
  • Strong documentation skills and ability to explain technical solutions clearly to non-technical finance stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build automations for recurring finance and accounting processes, including bank reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable matching, journal entry preparation, accrual calculations, and close checklists.
  • Develop process automation and workflow solutions using Power Automate, UiPath, or similar platforms, with exception handling and human review points.
  • Build and maintain ETL pipelines that bring data from ERP and other information systems, including Workday, Oracle, and PeopleSoft, into reporting environments.
  • Write SQL queries and scripts to validate data, identify anomalies, and support general ledger analysis, reconciliations, and chart of accounts cleanup.
  • Design and maintain dashboards and recurring financial reports for controllers, treasurers, budget offices, and boards, including fund-level, grant-level, and capital asset reporting.
  • Build automated control testing and monitoring routines aligned with COSO, producing evidence for internal and external financial statement audits, state audits, and Single Audits under Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200).
  • Document automations, including process maps, logic, data lineage, access controls, and runbooks, so clients can maintain and audit them independently.
  • Establish version control, testing, and change management practices for automations and ensure compliance with client IT security and data governance policies.
  • Train client staff to operate, monitor, and modify automations, and transition ownership to permanent teams at the end of an engagement.
  • Evaluate client processes, identify automation opportunities, estimate return on investment, and recommend a prioritized roadmap.
  • Support backfill and interim engagements where automations reduce workload for embedded consultants, documenting the automations for returning staff.
  • Work independently and collaboratively, lead projects or workstreams, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and provide clear guidance to others.

  • Broad range of employee benefits.
