About The Position

The College of Engineering (CoE) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has complex financial and accounting needs due to its multiple academic departments, research centers, and diverse funding sources. This position performs responsible professional accounting practices, applying accounting theories and principles. Key activities include fiscal year-end closing coordination, expenditure monitoring, fund balance reconciliation, interpretation of fund requirements, ensuring expenditure compliance, advising on accounting matters, and serving as a resource for policy development, interpretation, and implementation. Applicants will be considered for Accountant I and Accountant II titles, with the final title and compensation dependent on experience and qualifications. This position may involve a hybrid work schedule, with up to 2 days remote and 3 days onsite after an initial 3-month in-person training period.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in accounting, finance, or related role.
  • Experience working with complex automated accounting systems and processes
  • Proficiency with Excel or other spreadsheet software

Responsibilities

  • Answers questions and provides accounting related information to internal and external stakeholders according to established policies and procedures
  • Organizes, prepares, and updates basic financial statements, monthly and year-end journal entries, accounts, ledgers, and reports for various financial needs within an automated financial system to ensure accurate recording and reporting of financial transactions
  • Prepares and/or approves financial transactions and payments
  • Assists with accounting and reviewing reconciliations, journal entries, schedules, and reports
  • Assists in preparing budgets and financial projections
  • Prepares and analyzes financial data, reports and records, identifies discrepancies, investigates, recommends, and implements basic solutions as needed

Benefits

  • The starting salary for the position is $63,000, but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
