About The Position

The Napa County Auditor-Controller’s Office is seeking a motivated Accountant-Auditor I/II to join its team and contribute to promoting accountability and transparency in County government. This role involves developing and applying accounting and auditing expertise within a local government setting. As part of the General Ledger and Financial Reporting function, the incumbent will perform professional-level accounting and auditing tasks supporting the local government's general ledger, financial reporting, and fiscal operations. The team is responsible for maintaining the accuracy of accounting records, preparing and analyzing financial information, performing account reconciliations, resolving discrepancies, assisting with closing activities, and supporting the preparation of annual financial statements and reports. The position requires adherence to governmental accounting principles, GAAP, relevant state and federal requirements, and established financial policies. Collaboration with team members, management, other departments, external auditors, and special district staff is essential to ensure financial data is accurate, complete, timely, and properly supported. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, a passion for accounting, a commitment to public service, and a talent for problem-solving. This is a flexibly staffed classification series with opportunities for advancement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in accounting or a closely related field (or at least 15 units of college-level accounting courses if the major is in a different field).
  • Possession of a Certified Public Accountant Certificate.
  • Two years of recent professional-level accounting experience equivalent to an Accountant-Auditor I (for Accountant-Auditor I, Pattern B).
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college with major course work in accounting or a closely related field (or at least 15 units of college-level accounting courses if the major is in a different field) (for Accountant-Auditor I, Pattern B).
  • Two years of professional-level accounting and/or auditing experience, preferably in a government agency (for Accountant-Auditor II, Pattern A).
  • Four years of progressively responsible professional-level accounting and/or auditing experience within the last 24 months, preferably in a government agency (for Accountant-Auditor II, Pattern B).
  • Associate’s degree with major course work in accounting or a closely related field (or at least 15 units of college-level accounting courses if the major is in a different field) (for Accountant-Auditor II, Pattern B).
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License may be required.
  • Maintain any required license, certification, registration, or appointment in good standing throughout employment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional-level accounting and auditing work in support of the local government's general ledger, financial reporting, and fiscal operations.
  • Maintain the integrity and accuracy of accounting records.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze financial information.
  • Perform account reconciliations.
  • Research and resolve discrepancies.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities.
  • Support the preparation of the government's annual financial statements and related reports.

  • Work closely and collaboratively with the functional team and manager, as well as with departments throughout the organization, external auditors, and special district staff to ensure financial information is accurate, complete, timely, and properly supported.
