About The Position

The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) is seeking applications for Academic Success Coordinator (ASC) positions. This is a full-time, twelve-month Administrative Professional role within the Academic Support Center, dedicated to supporting undergraduate majors within the College of Liberal Arts, which serves over 5,000 students. The ASC will advise approximately 330 students, playing a crucial role in strengthening departmental and College efforts to provide quality advising and promote undergraduate student success. This position supports a holistic approach to student success by providing necessary assistance, guidance, and resources. The primary functions include fostering successful transitions to the university, promoting major exploration to ensure appropriate choices, and encouraging timely graduation. Requirements

  • M.A. required in a liberal arts discipline or a BA in a liberal arts discipline and a master’s in Student Affairs in Higher Education/College Personnel Administration or Counseling or Career Counseling or a related master’s degree.
  • Experience working directly with students in a variety of student populations.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Advise students in assigned majors regarding curriculum, course offerings, and degree progress.
  • Provide comprehensive advising, establishing continuous relationships with a focus on first- and second-year students through graduation, including transition issues.
  • Maintain accurate advising notes in the online system, track advisee performance, and monitor students on academic probation for referrals to resources.
  • Implement strategic interventions, including proactive outreach to at-risk students, participation in retention and grade monitoring, and assisting students with academic difficulties, probation, or withdrawal considerations.
  • Advise students on retroactive withdrawals and academic dismissal appeals, guiding them in crafting appeals and developing action plans for academic improvement.
  • Perform advising activities related to course selection, registration, schedule revisions, and credit load recommendations.
  • Interpret curriculum requirements, options, and best practices across programs, exploring student goals, future plans, challenges, and obstacles.
  • Provide advising for two or more CLA academic departments as assigned.
  • Understand and address issues confronting under-represented students (ethnically diverse, military veterans, non-traditional aged, parents, disabled students, International, etc.), helping them navigate resources and build confidence.
  • Assist students in developing sophisticated decision-making skills.
  • Integrate technology and tools for student success into advising.
  • Act as mentors and advocates, professionally communicating with students or families regarding academic policies, courses, grades, or tuition, and guiding them to resolution.
  • Interpret and apply conflict management and resolution skills when working with dissatisfied individuals.
  • Interpret, apply, and enforce University and College of Liberal Arts policies and procedures, as well as State and Federal laws.
  • Model personal and professional ethics.
  • Develop and manage registration processes and procedures to ensure timely student registration.
  • Assist with presentations and advising at recruitment and orientation events (e.g., Ram Welcome, Ram Orientation) for new and transfer students.
  • Provide academic advising and general advising information to parents and families during orientation sessions.
  • Collaborate with other college and campus programs to facilitate student success.
  • Participate in the Academic Success Coordinator network, sharing best practices.
  • Collaborate with other CLA ASCs to create new programs and procedures.
  • Collaborate with assigned major department(s), faculty, and staff.
  • Approve and administer course substitutions and waivers for degree requirements with prior major department approval.
  • Provide curricular feedback to departments based on student interactions.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge on university policy, procedure, and advising best practices.
  • Learn and maintain ongoing knowledge of new technologies and tools for student success.
  • Track student contacts and outreach, analyze data from Institutional Research and other university systems, and produce two annual reports.
