About The Position

The G. Brint Ryan College of Business is seeking an Academic Counselor to provide advanced academic and career counseling, referrals, and degree program advising to undergraduate business majors and prospective business majors. This role involves individual and group sessions, program development and evaluation to enhance student retention, and managing degree advising activities such as preparing degree plans, evaluating transcripts, processing graduation applications, and community relations. The position may also involve leading and training advising staff and managing Transfer Orientation processes. Requirements

  • Master's degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
  • Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory.
  • Strong presentation, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong counseling skills, including career development and group facilitation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Remains active in professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains effective knowledge and use of advising approaches for implementation in individual advising sessions and in construction and implementation of advising programs.
  • Advises prospective and current students regarding University and degree requirements, as well as career/major choices, in a timely and professional manner.
  • Supports leading and training advising staff.
  • Manages and leads Transfer Orientation processes and procedures.
  • Effectively coordinates and leads interventions for undergraduate students, helping them navigate issues.
  • Manages processes and programs designed for students exploring RCOB degree options.
  • Efficiently, accurately and thoroughly maintains and updates student degree plans and other records, including graduation applications, using university and advising technology.
  • Demonstrates high level of professionalism within office, College, University and community.
  • Completes miscellaneous projects and tasks as requested by supervisor, Director, Assistant Dean and/or Associate Dean.
