About The Position

This role provides an opportunity to make a direct impact on student success by supporting the academic, personal, and career development of students in a diverse and inclusive educational environment. As a Counselor/Academic Advisor, you will provide academic advising, career counseling, and personal/transitional counseling to a caseload of students who are deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing. You will collaborate with faculty, staff, parents, vocational rehabilitation counselors, and other campus and community partners to help students navigate challenges, achieve their goals, and make the most of their RIT experience. The position also includes maintaining case documentation, participating in departmental initiatives, and delivering presentations and outreach activities as needed. NTID Counseling & Academic Advising Services recruits and hires Counselors/Academic Advisors (CAA) at different levels of experience and skill in its career ladder: Counselor/Academic Advisor OR Senior Counselor/Academic Advisor OR Assistant Director. Salary and Placement in the career ladder and assignment will be determined by experience, professional licensure, certification, and skill proficiency level.

Requirements

Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work or a related clinical field
Two or more years of professional counseling, academic advising or career counseling work experience
Sign language proficiency
Knowledge of mental health counseling, academic advising, and career counseling principles and practices
Skill in written, verbal, and interpersonal communication to influence and articulate a variety of topics to different and diverse audiences
Skill in multi-tasking, project management, prioritization, and organization
Ability to handle sensitive situations with empathy, cultural awareness, and confidentiality
Ability to maintain detailed and compliant documentation such as case notes, semester reports, and appraisals
Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

National Certified Counselor, Certified Social Worker, Certified School Counselor or related clinical field certification

Responsibilities

Meets with students to review degree progress and assesses progress against graduation requirements.
Ensures student understand how to navigate course registration and degree requirements
Monitors students’ progress and helps students resolve requirement concerns.
Identifies alternative courses and solutions to meet degree requirements.
Assists students with changing course registration
Reviews career goals with students and assists students with post-college planning, including reviewing and revising resumes, identifying valuable internships and fellowships, and coaching with interviews
Maintains knowledge of key registration and enrollment dates.
Stays current in best practices related to academic advising, student success, and higher education
Assists students in identifying resources and communicating with administrators, faculty, staff, other department and service groups regarding counseling, financial aid, career services, student life, and disability services as needed
Conducts outreach to students to build and foster relations, provide helpful information, and ensure students are aware of available services
Other duties as assigned
