About The Position

The Ferguson College of Agriculture is looking for applicants to join our new team of Academic Advisors at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK. You will play a crucial role in guiding undergraduate students through their academic journeys and connecting them with the resources they need to succeed. As a Ferguson College academic advisor, you will be part of an academic community dedicated to fostering a student-focused culture and achieving student success goals. This position advises students concerning program inquiries, students’ academic plans and progress, academic schedule, choice of major, and other academic activities and career goals. Academic advisors are expected to proactively reach out to students in various situations to offer support, and to assist students in making decisions concerning personal educational goals leading to graduation. Successful candidates will possess a balance of social skills to develop meaningful connections with students, attention to detail to provide accurate information, an understanding of academic policies and procedures, and a commitment to creating a welcoming environment. Selected candidates will participate in professional development activities, including on-campus and off-campus workshops, webinars, and conferences and serve on University committees as needed. Selected candidates may also teach up to 2 sections of UNIV 1111 (Freshman Seminar). Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree conferred on or before the agreed-upon start date.
  • Academic Advisor I: Bachelor’s Degree and zero – two years of experience in a comparable position.
  • Academic Advisor II: Bachelor’s Degree and two to three years of experience in comparable position.
  • Academic Advisor III: Bachelor’s Degree and three to five years of experience in a comparable position.
  • Senior Academic Advisor I: Bachelor's Degree and five to seven years of experience in a comparable position.
  • Senior Academic Advisor II: Bachelor’s Degree and seven years of experience in a comparable position.
  • Administrative experience that could include responsibility with unit programs and/or student groups.
  • Supervisory experience to include interviewing, training and development, etc. of employees and/or student leaders.
  • Coordination of special projects.
  • Ability to maintain accurate, confidential student records and ensure documentation integrity.
  • Ability to quickly learn information and data management systems for use in advising and mentoring situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex information clearly and support students in decision making.
  • Ability to effectively present information in large group settings.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to build rapport and work effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with the student population, applying inclusive and responsive advising practices.
  • Ability to assess student needs, interpret data, and identify appropriate interventions or resources.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accuracy under pressure.
  • Positive, proactive attitude with the ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree.
  • At least one degree in studies related to agriculture or natural resources.
  • At least two years of advising experience and/or higher education experience.
  • Strong knowledge of academic programs, degree requirements, curricula, and course prerequisites, including the ability to interpret academic records and placement information.
  • Understanding of university academic policies, procedures, and regulations, particularly those related to graduation, enrollment, and transfer credit.
  • Proficiency with advising technologies and student information systems, and ability to use data to track student progress and inform advising decisions.
  • Evidence of successful teaching experiences with high school or college students.
  • Ability to provide academic counseling and developmental guidance, including support related to course selection, goal setting, career exploration, and academic challenges.
  • Skill in identifying and supporting at-risk students, providing proactive outreach, referrals, and follow up to promote persistence.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills to address academic issues, evaluate petitions, and support decision making.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and staying current with advising and higher education best practices.
