About The Position

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences seeks an Academic Advisor II to advise undergraduate students in our social sciences unit. This advisor will likely support students pursuing a major in psychology and assist with students in the social science degree areas of criminal justice, political science, and sociology. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the most academically varied college at Iowa State University. With 21 academic departments, one professional school, over 50 undergraduate majors, and more than 20 cross-disciplinary programs, the college plays a central role in nearly every major offered at Iowa State. Successful candidates will bring a student-centered lens to advising, have a preference for collaboration, and possess experience advising, counseling or teaching a variety of populations in one-on-one and group meetings. They will also possess excellent communication, organization, leadership, and time management skills. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in a liberal arts or science area or one of the college’s curricular areas
  • Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, advising, education or a liberal arts or science area
  • Experience advising, teaching, counseling students or working directly with clients/customers
  • Experience using workplace technology or educational platforms (i.e., Workday, Outlook, Excel, Canvas, Navigate)
  • Experience teaching or conducting large group workshops, presentations, seminars, or meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Advise students concerning degree planning, academic enhancements, academic support services, academic policy issues, and graduation requirements
  • Refer students to appropriate resources such as counseling, academic success, financial aid, etc.
  • Assist with new student orientation programming and will likely teach an orientation course.
  • Present at orientation and other new or prospective student events.
  • Participate in recruitment and retention activities.
  • May coordinate and advise learning communities and peer mentors.
  • Participate in departmental and curriculum committees.
