About The Position

Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) is seeking an Academic Advisor I-II to join their Academic Advising department. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (for both Academic Advisor I and II).
  • Two (2) years of experience advising students in higher education or related experience (for Academic Advisor II).
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.), databases, and spreadsheets.
  • Strong active listening, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work as a team member and to work independently.
  • Demonstrated initiative and follow-through skills; tact, diplomacy, and judgment in dealing with students, parents, faculty, and administrators.
  • Detail-oriented and demonstrated ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work beyond normal office hours including evening and/or weekends.
  • Ability to lead students in developing a sense of purpose and belonging while developing their educational and personal goals.
  • Ability to use student information systems, degree planning, and degree audits.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others, present information clearly and concisely, work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficient analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Business Administration, Marketing, Finance, Accounting, Management, or related field of study (for both Academic Advisor I and II).
  • Up to One (1) year of experience advising students in higher education (for Academic Advisor I).
  • Three (3) years of experience advising students in higher education (for Academic Advisor II).
  • Experience with Banner, Argos, Starfish, Laserfiche, and Degree Works (for both Academic Advisor I and II).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of developmental academic advising methodologies (for both Academic Advisor I and II).
  • Attend and/or present at the national conference (i.e., NACADA, TEXANN, Texas Success Conference, etc.) and implemented applicable best practices across the unit.

Responsibilities

  • Provides academic advising for students grounded in tenets of practice outlined by the National Association of Academic Advising (NACADA) and appropriate academic advising and student development theories.
  • Advises for course selection, registration, academic planning, career and educational goal-setting, appropriate resources, transitioning to the university, and retention issues.
  • Documents student advising outcomes adequately to meet department and institutional disclosure guidelines and aid in subsequent advising activities.
  • Advises in both group and individual settings with current and prospective students.
  • Performs appointment preparations including, but not limited to, reviewing all accessible academic records for accuracy and appropriateness of course work, communicating with academic departments for major-specific transfer equivalencies, and requesting the posting of approved transfer courses.
  • Processes academic forms and follows up on processed forms to ensure that the student's record accurately represents the student's chosen major, minor, concentration, and catalog year.
  • Interprets State, University, and college policies and procedures.
  • May travel to national and/or regional advising conferences; may be required to work beyond normal office hours including evening and/or on weekends.
  • Advocates for student needs associated with their educational and academic program.
  • Clearly communicates accurate and timely information to students and interprets institutional, general education, and major requirements per the university catalog.
  • Exhibits strong, active listening skills.
  • Helps students develop a realistic self-perception and successful transition into the university and helps them to establish realistic goals for future endeavors.
  • Monitors academic progress and implements intervention strategies for students who receive academic alerts or who need assistance in maintaining or improving their academic standing.
  • Directs students to resources, programs, and services on campus when it is appropriate to do so.
  • Helps students integrate information so that they may make well-informed academic decisions.
  • Works to establish a partnership with students that will guide them efficiently through their academic program.
  • Monitors students advising requirements: Notifies students of academic advising requirements when certain conditions have or have not been met.
  • Maintains accurate and complete student file documentation.
  • Prepares for and participates in on- and off-campus recruiting activities.
  • Prepares for, presents, and advises at first-year student orientations.
  • Supports retention efforts include using Starfish and requiring probationary and returning suspension students to schedule an appointment and discuss university guidelines and expectations at the undergraduate levels.
  • May lead workshops, seminars, and other student engagement activities across campus.
  • Maintains a professional and cordial liaison with administrators, faculty, staff, students, and other involved constituents concerning advisees and program.
  • Tracks and obtains documents needed for potential and current students from other constituencies on campus.
  • Collaborates with members of the campus community in student retention initiatives.
  • May serve in appropriate committees to advocate for students.
  • May conduct research on topics within the field of academic advising and attend activities for professional development.
  • Attends TAMU-CC Commencement ceremonies.
  • Complies with all state, system, and university policies, regulations, rules, procedures, guidelines, and directives in a timely manner and adheres to confidentiality policies (FERPA).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • May supervise projects (Academic Advisor II).
  • Leads workshops, seminars, and other student engagement activities across campus (Academic Advisor II).
  • Leads and oversees special projects specific to the academic college or advising center (Academic Advisor II).
  • May provide reports and data analysis of advising initiatives and special populations (Academic Advisor II).
  • Mentors and builds strong relationships with other advisors (Academic Advisor II).
