The Academic Advisor for Athletic Student Retention will deliver interactional academic advising experiences for assigned students, including specialized advising for student-athletes to help them balance academic and athletic commitments. This role provides supplemental advising and registration assistance to all current undergraduate students, with particular attention to NAIA eligibility requirements for student-athletes. The advisor ensures students understand and navigate the class registration process, understand degree and general education requirements, and are aware of academic policies related to athletic participation. Additionally, the advisor will teach the undergraduate Freshman Orientation 1-credit course each semester and any other undergraduate course as needed to support academic success initiatives, including guidance and counseling. The position involves addressing all areas of academic concerns with students, such as tutoring, study skills, and time management, and connecting student-athletes with appropriate academic support resources within the athletic department and the broader university. Referrals to other services like counseling, financial aid, career services, student life, and disability services will be made, with close collaboration with athletic department staff. The role also requires participation in professional development opportunities to stay current on best practices in athletic advising and NAIA regulations, as well as high-impact practices related to academic advising, student success, and higher education. The advisor will contribute to the department's success by completing other duties as needed to promote the vision, mission, and values of the College.
