The College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Virginia is hiring an Academic Advising Dean, a senior-level academic advisor who provides specialized support to undergraduate students. Advising Deans address complex matters such as academic warnings and suspensions, university referrals, appeals of academic decisions, and academic planning in extenuating circumstances. They oversee a semesterly academic audit to identify students who may be in academic jeopardy and help them plan for progress toward graduation. Advising Deans also teach in the College’s General Education curriculum, including Engagements courses that introduce first-year students to the liberal arts and sciences through seminar topics. The role models a student-centered approach to advising. Advising Deans generally support a broad student population, though some may be assigned a specialized portfolio, such as athletes, veterans, transfer students, or Echols scholars. They participate in professional development and serve as a resource to faculty and departments. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to the liberal arts and sciences, knowledge of College curriculum and policy, and an empathetic approach to supporting students’ intellectual and emotional development. This is an exempt-level, benefited position based fully on-site in Charlottesville, Virginia. The anticipated salary is $81,000, commensurate with education and experience. A terminal degree is required, preferably in the liberal arts and sciences, along with at least five years of experience.
