About The Position

The Abbey Café Manager is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and successful operation of the Abbey Café, serving both the public and Slingshot. This role blends hands-on operational leadership with team development, hospitality excellence, and business stewardship. The ideal candidate is an organized, people-focused leader who values collaboration, consistency, and creating a welcoming café culture while balancing a profit driven mindset.

Requirements

  • Prior management experience in a café, coffee shop, or food and beverage environment.
  • Strong leadership skills with a people-first approach.
  • Ability to clearly communicate and reinforce standards.
  • Willingness to hold staff and self accountable to standards.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting.
  • Excellent customer service instincts and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of food safety, health codes, and operational best practices.
  • Basic financial literacy, including budgeting, labor management, and inventory tracking.
  • Dependable, organized, and proactive problem solver.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all daily café operations, including food and beverage preparation, opening/closing procedures, cleanliness, and overall flow.
  • Ensure operational standards are followed consistently to deliver a high-quality guest experience.
  • Maintain compliance with all health, safety, food handling, and licensing regulations.
  • Manage and report on inventory levels, ordering, and vendor coordination to ensure the cafe is stocked appropriately.
  • Sustain quarterly maintenance to coffee equipment and water filtration.
  • Ensure the cafe is appropriately staffed to meet business needs during operating hours including spending 80% of time (4 out of 5 shifts) on the bar as a barista.
  • Hire, train, schedule, and support café staff to ensure proper coverage and performance.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and team-oriented work environment.
  • Provide clear expectations, ongoing coaching, and performance feedback for employees.
  • Set the tone for exceptional customer service and hospitality.
  • Ensure guests feel welcomed, valued, and cared for in every interaction.
  • Address guest feedback, questions, and concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Work with the team to continuously improve the café experience.
  • Plan, execute and staff special events as needed.
  • Manage the café budget with a focus on sustainability and responsible cost control.
  • Track daily sales, cash handling, and reporting accurately.
  • Monitor labor to support profitability.
  • Scheduling based on sales.
  • Labor spend in line with pay period budget.
  • Partner with leadership to review performance trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Support menu execution and consistency across all food and beverage offerings.
  • Maintain quality standards for preparation, presentation, and taste.
  • Assist with menu updates or seasonal offerings as directed.
  • Manually review menu pricing and cost to ensure margins are staying within a healthy range.
  • All other duties as assigned.
