About The Position

The Chippewa County Communication Center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Telecommunicators assist the public by dispatching Police, Fire, or Emergency Medical Services, providing responsive, courteous, and efficient service to County residents and the general public. This role involves working 12-hour shifts (day or night), which include weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency call-ins. Open positions may be assigned to either shift based on staffing needs, with assignments and preferences managed through a seniority-based process. Candidates must be willing and able to work either days or nights, as well as weekends and holidays.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
  • A valid driver’s license required.
  • Successfully pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam and audiogram.
  • Successfully pass a drug screen.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous emergency services dispatch experience preferred.
  • 911 training preferred.
  • CPR Certification preferred.
  • Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification preferred.
  • Time System Certification required within one (1) year of hire.
  • Previous experience working in a 24/7 environment preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a countywide communication system consisting of 12 radio channels and 13 incoming phone lines.
  • Dispatch personnel and apparatus via radio for 7 police agencies, 14 fire departments, 8 ambulance services, and 8 first responder services.
  • Receive emergency and non-emergency calls for police, sheriff, fire, and emergency medical services.
  • Assess the need and urgency of requests and situations.
  • Maintain contact with all units on duty; maintain status and location of police, fire, and EMS units.
  • Provide court testimony as required.
  • Assist in coordination of multiple events and emergency responses using all available information, accomplishing work in a composed and competent manner while working under stress.
  • Maintain a log of all transmissions for the Sheriff’s Department.
  • Answer telephone calls and requests for information from the public on laws, ordinances and various locations in the County.
  • Effectively communicate and gather information from citizens.
