About The Position

The 6th Grade Boys' Basketball Coach directs the boys' basketball program at the sixth-grade level at Garrison Middle School. The coach teaches individual, group, and team techniques, tactics, and physical training; promotes ethical competition, sportsmanship, leadership, and citizenship; and supports skill development, performance expectations, and the established off-season strength, conditioning, and skills program. The role is guided by the Walla Walla School District and Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) missions, policies, and coaching standards.

The role reports within the district's athletic and school leadership structure. Applicants must satisfy the stated education, coaching, certification, safety, application, and background-check requirements. Compensation is through the Extra Curricular Salary Schedule.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• WIAA certification and compliance with WIAA and district rules and regulations.
• Meet the WIAA age requirements applicable to the position.
• Possess current First Aid and CPR cards and be versed in related preventative health and training standards.
• Meet and maintain coaching standards determined by the District and WIAA.
• Complete an employment application and background check.
• Submit a resume of education and experience and references, including three current recommendations.
• Demonstrate the ability to carry out program duties established by the Head Coach, Middle School Principal, Athletic Director, and district policies.
• Demonstrate coaching knowledge in skill-development scope and sequence, safety, teamwork, strategy, interpersonal relations, routine training, and practice and game organization.
• Demonstrate effective communication and cooperative working relationships with students, parents, coaches, administrators, staff, and the community, along with effective public relations skills.
• Show short- and long-term organization and management skills and evidence of being a positive role model.
• Have a clearly defined coaching philosophy for the level applied for, as well as professional integrity, vigor, flexibility, and enthusiasm.

Responsibilities

• Direct the boys' basketball program at the sixth-grade level at Garrison Middle School.
• Implement teaching and coaching philosophies consistent with the Walla Walla School District and WIAA mission statements.
• Instruct participants in individual, group, and team techniques, tactics, and physical training.
• Communicate a clearly defined philosophy emphasizing ethical competition, sportsmanship, leadership, and citizenship with students, parents, staff, and community members.
• Use effective coaching techniques for skill development, strategy, and interpersonal team relations.
• Develop and promote high performance expectations for players and coaches.
• Support and help implement the established off-season strength, conditioning, and skills development program.
• Carry out program duties as established by the Head Coach, Middle School Principal, Athletic Director, and district policies.
• Organize and manage training, practices, and games while promoting safety, teamwork, and positive interpersonal relations.
