About The Position

Varsity Spirit, a Varsity Brands Company, is seeking a 3 Knife Operator Associate to join the Yearbook Bindery Production Team. In this role, you will set up and operate a Cutter to achieve the trim size specified on the job ticket. You will work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment producing high school and college yearbooks. While technical skills are important, your drive, commitment to quality, and safety are paramount. This is a team-oriented role where collaboration and assistance across various functions and machines are essential.

Requirements

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Ability to write simple correspondence.
Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Must be able to work with limited or no supervision.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to troubleshoot and fix problems independently after training.
Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
Must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and push or pull wheeled carts capable of holding up to 1100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Must be able to tolerate loud noise.
Must be able to tolerate working in a non-climate-controlled environment.
Candidates must be available to work 2nd or 3rd shift seasonally.
Must be able to work all hours needed, including overtime and weekends (ALL EMPLOYEES NEED TO BE PREPARED TO WORK 7 DAYS A WEEK WITH ADVANCE NOTICE).

Responsibilities

Examines work order to determine setup specifications.
Sets up 3-Knife to proper trim size, using preprogrammed trim sizes or special trim sizes as required.
Measures book thickness and enters program.
Verifies book block is trimmed to the proper size before passing it to the Casing Operator.
Stacks bound books on the conveyor belt of the automatic feed.
Sets up book De-stacker.
Activates machine by pressing buttons and observes machine operation, ensuring vacuum is on before starting.
Performs periodic quality checks throughout the run to ensure clean cuts, no nicks in blades, and overall quality.
Adjusts machine during production run as required.
Verifies count matches the quantity needed at the end of the job.
Cleans and maintains the machine as necessary, including greasing, oiling, and other required maintenance.
Changes blades as needed.
Provides various required paper stocks for Press operations.
Properly loads and positions paper onto the press.
Lines out jobs, sorts, bends, and positions plates for running.
Properly loads plates in the Automatic Plate Hangers.
Properly disposes of used plates into recycle bins.
Performs necessary maintenance functions such as cleaning, lubricating, and preventative maintenance as scheduled and light repairs as needed upon the direction of the Press Operator.
Assists Press Operator in troubleshooting and solving press errors.
Schedules press workflow according to established department criteria.
Assists in mounting blanket and cylinder washers.
Observes all established procedures for safe chemical handling and storage.
Abides by all standard safe operating procedures as outlined in the company training program.
Responsible for the economic usage of materials and the care and safekeeping of tools and equipment.
Ensures safe and efficient press operation.
Ensures safe and proper handling of soiled press rags.
Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment at all times.
