About The Position

Varsity Spirit, a Varsity Brands Company, is seeking a 3 Knife Operator Associate to join the Yearbook Bindery Production Team. This role involves setting up and operating a Cutter to achieve specified trim sizes on job tickets in a fast-paced manufacturing environment that produces high school and college yearbooks. While technical skills are important, a strong drive for quality and safety, along with a commitment to teamwork, is highly valued. The position requires assisting across various functions and machines, emphasizing collaboration and mutual support within the team.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Must be able to work with limited or no supervision.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to trouble shoot and fix problems on own after training.
  • Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
  • Must regularly lift and /or move up to 75 pounds and push or pull wheeled carts capable of holding up to 1100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to tolerate working in a non-climate-controlled environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates must be available to work 2nd or 3rd shift seasonally.
  • Must be able to work all hours needed, including overtime and weekends (ALL EMPLOYEES NEED TO BE PREPARED TO WORK 7 DAYS A WEEK WITH ADVANCE NOTICE)

Responsibilities

  • Examines work order to determine setup specifications.
  • Setup 3-Knife to proper trim size (Using preprogrammed trim sizes for 7-8-9. Some jobs require special trim sizes.)
  • Measure book thickness and enter program.
  • Verify book block is trimmed to the proper size before giving it to the Casing Operator for their setup.
  • Stack bound books on conveyor belt of automatic feed.
  • Setup book De-stacker.
  • Presses button to activate machine and observes machine operation (Make sure vacuum is on before starting the job.)
  • Quality check books periodically throughout the run to ensure quality (Look for clean cuts, ensure no nicks in blades, and verify a good clean cut.)
  • Adjust machine during production run as required.
  • Verify count matches quantity needed at the end of the job.
  • Clean and Maintain machine as necessary (Grease, Oil and other needed maintenance).
  • Change Blades as needed.
  • Provides various required paper stocks for Press operations.
  • Properly loads and positions paper onto press.
  • Lines out jobs, sort, bends and positions plates in order, to be run.
  • Properly loads plates in the Automatic Plate Hangers.
  • Properly disposes of used plates into the recycle bins.
  • Performs necessary maintenance functions such as cleaning, lubricating and preventative maintenance as scheduled and light repairs as needed upon the direction of the Press Operator.
  • Assists Press Operator in troubleshooting and solving press errors.
  • Schedules press workflow according to established department criteria.
  • Assists in mounting blanket and cylinder washers.
  • Observes all established procedures for safe chemical handling and storage.
  • Abides by all standard safe operating procedures as outlined in the company training program.
  • Responsible for the economic usage of materials and the care and safekeeping of tools and equipment.
  • Ensure safe and efficient press operation.
  • Ensures safe and proper handling of soiled press rags.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment at all times.
