About The Position

Sanofi is seeking a highly motivated co-op student to join its Cell Line and Vector Development GMU CMC team in Waltham, Massachusetts. The role works at the intersection of cell line development, vector development, data science, and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) to advance process understanding and accelerate CMC development activities. The co-op provides hands-on experience applying computational and data-driven approaches to biological and manufacturing challenges, in collaboration with scientists across Cell Line and Vector Development, Analytical Development, Process Development, and Digital/Data Science. The co-op will support AAV-based gene therapy programs and use experimental and process-development data to help inform scientific decisions, improve process understanding, and optimize development workflows. The role also contributes to automated laboratory workflows and high-throughput cell line screening and vector production. The position is based onsite in Waltham, Massachusetts, and requires 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for the full six-month co-op. Students must remain enrolled at an accredited college or university throughout the co-op and be able to relocate to the office location.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D. degree in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, Computational Biology, Data Science, Chemical Engineering, Life Sciences, or a related field, with plans to graduate after completing the co-op.
  • Must be permanently authorized to work in the United States without requiring employment visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future. Students on CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT generally do not meet this requirement unless eligible for an alternative long-term status that does not require company sponsorship.
  • Must remain enrolled in an accredited college or university throughout the duration of the co-op.
  • Must be able to relocate to the office location and work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for the full duration of the co-op.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and within a cross-functional team environment.
  • Interest in applying AI/ML techniques to accelerate biopharmaceutical and gene therapy development.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in Python for data analysis, automation scripting, and/or machine learning; experience with scikit-learn, pandas, NumPy, TensorFlow, or PyTorch is a strong plus.
  • Familiarity with machine learning, statistical modeling, or multivariate data analysis, such as PLS or PCA.
  • Experience with data pipeline development, API integration, or connecting software to instruments.
  • Familiarity with Design of Experiments (DoE) tools such as JMP, Spotfire, or similar tools for structured experimental planning.
  • Experience with laboratory automation platforms such as Hamilton, Tecan, Biomek, or similar liquid handling systems.
  • Basic familiarity with molecular biology, cell culture, viral vectors, or gene therapy; this is beneficial but not required.
  • Curiosity and willingness to learn biology in context.
  • Experience organizing, visualizing, and interpreting complex biological datasets.

Responsibilities

  • Support Cell Line and Vector Development activities for AAV-based gene therapy programs.
  • Analyze experimental and process-development datasets using statistical and computational tools.
  • Develop data visualizations, automated workflows, and predictive models to support scientific decision-making.
  • Apply AI/ML approaches to improve process understanding, identify trends, and optimize development workflows.
  • Develop and/or operate automated laboratory workflows using liquid handling platforms and integrated robotic systems for high-throughput cell line screening and vector production.
  • Assist with experimental design, data interpretation, and presentation of results.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate data-driven approaches into CMC development activities.
  • Present findings, recommendations, and project updates to team members and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing and adoption of AI/ML capabilities across the organization.

Benefits

  • Apprenticeships, internships, graduate programs, and international experiences for skill development.
  • Mentoring and collaboration with supportive teams.
  • Access to the latest tools, digital innovation, and continuous learning.
