About The Position
WOOD TV in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is seeking an investigative storyteller with strong news judgment, a passion for storytelling, and a solid background in reporting across multiple media platforms. The role requires handling stories across a range of topics, uncovering documents, filing FOIAs, and holding people accountable. Multiplatform reporting is essential, including producing content for WOODTV.com, WOODTV+ streaming newscasts, WOOD-TV newscasts, and social media. The position also requires experience covering hard news and the ability to shoot and edit stories and create vertical videos. The Investigative MMJ reports on daily news assignments and contributes enterprise content while developing community, government, and law-enforcement sources. The journalist collaborates with newsroom colleagues to deliver news across platforms and supports a newsroom culture of integrity and collaboration.
Requirements
- Minimum five years of journalism experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
- Strong journalistic background and excellent writing skills.
- Ability to perform under pressure.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, and weekends.
- Positive collaboration with colleagues and effective interaction with the public.
- Excellent news judgment and expansive knowledge of local and national current events, history, newsmakers, and issues.
- Ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks on multiple WOOD platforms simultaneously.
- Experience covering hard news.
- Ability to shoot and edit, create vertical videos, post on social media, and generate stories for WOODTV.com, WOODTV+ streaming newscasts, and WOOD-TV newscasts.
Responsibilities
- Report on daily news assignments and contribute to daily enterprise content.
- Uncover documents that support investigative journalism.
- Collaborate with photographers, producers, management, and the assignment desk to deliver news on all platforms.
- When necessary, shoot and edit stories, social posts, and digital content.
- Establish and maintain sources in the community, government, and law enforcement.
- Support a positive newsroom culture, collaborate, and foster an environment of integrity.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
