About The Position

This position is assigned at 0.5 FTE. The MLS Program manages both the Master of Legal Studies (MLS) degree and the Certificate of Legal Studies (CLS) at UC Law SF. The MLS degree is designed for individuals who do not seek to practice law, but who want to equip themselves with a sophisticated understanding of legal reasoning and doctrine. The CLS is an intensive introduction to the law and legal thinking. THE ROLE and RESPONSIBILITIES Under the general direction of and reporting to the Associate Dean for the MLS Program, the Associate Director helps the Associate Dean manage and administer the MLS program (both masters and certificate students). The following non-exhaustive list includes examples of the kinds of projects on which the Associate Director will work: Partner with the Associate Dean to provide leadership and oversight for the MLS Program, including identifying program and curricular needs, encouraging innovation, and keeping up to date on developments in the national legal masters space. Collaborate with other departments at the College, respond to correspondence, serve as an active member of the administrative team, and fill in as needed for the Associate Dean at meetings, sessions, and events. Support students, including by leading or participating in academic advising sessions, providing administrative and academic support for students, and working with students, faculty, and staff to constructively resolve problems and conflicts. In coordination with the Associate Dean and other MLS program staff, lead the creation or maintenance of documentation for the MLS program and outcomes, implement College rules and regulations, and as needed, propose changes to or new regulations for the MLS program. Propose and develop academic, co-curricular, and social programming for MLS and CLS students, including events and newsletters, and help facilitate connections between current students and alumni. Oversee any student workers and help oversee the MLS Program Coordinator and other MLS program staff. Support curricular development by: identifying, onboarding, and training competent attorneys and law faculty to teach live courses or develop and teach asynchronous courses; building or soliciting online content. Perform other duties as assigned. The incumbent, if qualified, may also be eligible for appointment as an adjunct professor to teach MLS-related courses.

Requirements

  • JD degree from ABA-accredited law school.
  • Minimum 3 years of practice experience as a lawyer.
  • Excellent writing, proofreading, and project management skills.
  • Excellent written legal analysis skills.
  • Ability to advise and mentor students.
  • Ability to model professionalism.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to effectively utilize computer and related technology for various informational and operational purposes.

Nice To Haves

  • State bar admission strongly preferred.
  • Ability to update web materials a plus.
  • Prior teaching and/or advising experience strongly preferred.
