About The Position

The Youth Wellness Worker (YWW) role contributes to the development and execution of programs addressing youth issues such as poverty, food insecurity, bullying, and self-image. The Worker collaborates with the afterschool program Co-ordinator to enhance access to supports and strategies for improving physical and mental wellness. This role involves developing and implementing meal and snack planning with participants, leading the "196+ program" for grade 9 students, and fostering an environment where participants can mentor younger peers. The YWW will thrive in a fast-paced setting and continuously seek program improvement through partnerships and collaborations.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelors’ degree (or equivalent) in social work, psychology, or a related human-service field
  • The ability to work with and relate to youth of diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively to engage participants
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and effective oral/written communication skills
  • Experience working with people using a strength-based approach
  • Knowledge and understanding of Community Youth Services
  • Experience with Community/social services sector
  • Ability to mediate and resolve conflict

Responsibilities

  • Supervise youth (grades 6-9) in groups and individually in person (virtually as required)
  • Work with youth in various settings including the kitchen setting to promote independence, self-confidence, and comprehension using hands-on activities, both one-to-one and as a group
  • Escort youth to different locations within the building and on community excursions
  • Help youth to engage in social interaction with peers
  • Help youth to learn appropriate social behaviors and to be accountable for their decisions
  • Create a safe and supportive space for participants
  • Liaise with community resources and partners to improve health outcomes for youth
  • Maintain program statics
  • Establish an environment to sustain interest and promote positive interactions between participants
  • Teach youth the importance of following rules and regulations and sharing a common space
  • Work with youth to plan, carryout activities
  • Teach participants the fundamentals of self-care and coping strategies
  • Committed to uphold the organization’s mission, values and standards
  • Work safely, identify any health and safety concerns and report to management, and follow Mission Services workplace health and safety policies and procedures at all times.
  • Identify Child Welfare concerns and report these concerns to the Program Manager and the appropriate community agencies as required by the Child and Family Services Act.
  • Adhere to a strict policy of confidentiality.
  • Other duties as required to ensure the continuation of service to clients
