About The Position

The Youth Services Librarian promotes the mission and values of the Greene County Public Library by carrying out objectives and goals of the strategic plan to better serve the community. This role involves planning and providing services and programming for children, young adults, families, and other community members, with a focus on promoting early childhood literacy. The position requires a commitment to continuous learning and professional development within the library field.

Requirements

  • Ability to provide knowledgeable customer service to assist all library patrons in a timely manner.
  • Ability to show tact and courtesy in relations with the public and other staff members.
  • Knowledge and appreciation for Children’s and Young Adult literature.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and read printed and on-screen information.
  • Proven computer skills and ability to input information into an automated system.
  • Ability to multi-task, work in a fast-paced environment, and handle difficult situations.
  • Ability to handle routine problems under guidance of supervisor and keep supervisor informed of departmental needs and concerns.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-3 years of Library and/or Customer Service experience strongly preferred.
  • Some experience demonstrating success with groups of youth, teens and strong knowledge of children’s and YA literature preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, designs, promotes, presents, and evaluates library programs including the Summer Reading Program for children, young adults, parents, and adults who work with children.
  • Provides reference assistance to patrons in person and/or by telephone, answering reference and reader's advisory questions and conducting necessary research.
  • Evaluates and maintains the juvenile and/or young adult materials collections and database to reflect community needs.
  • Consults with teachers and prepares collections for use with their classes.
  • Teaches basic library skills to groups of youth during class visit orientations and conducts other training programs for youth.
  • Plans and/or prepares displays, bibliographies, and other informational materials.
  • Provides outreach to children by visiting local child care facilities, schools, and other youth facilities to promote library services or programs.
  • Works within specific GCPL budgets, such as collection development, paid performers, and program supplies.
  • Instructs and aids library users in the use of the library and reference tools, providing both one-to-one assistance and group presentations.
  • Troubleshoots all electronic resources and equipment in the department.
  • Assumes "person in charge" responsibilities in the absence of the department head.
  • Assists in training employees.
  • Responsible for opening/closing procedures.
  • Gathers statistics, prepares reports, and completes other assigned projects.
  • Participates in countywide children’s services and attends meetings of the Children’s and/or YA Council.
  • Keeps abreast of current developments in the field through attendance and participation in conferences, workshops, continuing education programs, professional reading, and participation in professional groups.
  • Attends conferences, workshops, seminars, and training to maintain knowledge as reflected in training curriculum.
  • Keeps abreast of information by regularly reading email, minutes, staff website, and attending staff meetings.
  • Performs tasks of lower-level classifications as necessary.
