About The Position

Shaker Heights Public Library is seeking a HT Youth Services Associate to help meet our mission of strengthening our diverse community and transforming lives by providing reference, readers’ advisory and programming services for youth up to grade 12 and the adults who care for them. The role requires excellent problem-solving skills, the ability to switch between multiple tasks, and enjoyment of daily collaboration. This involves interacting with children and teens to help them locate and use library materials, choose items based on their interests, find and evaluate information, and use electronic resources including databases, e-media, and computers. The ideal candidate will enjoy working with and helping youth of all ages and backgrounds in a diverse community.

Requirements

• A minimum of two years of college, with a bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.
• General knowledge of youth programming, early literacy milestones, popular culture, and basic homework help strategies.
• Customer service experience.
• Experience working directly with people from diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, and of all genders, sexual orientations, and ages.
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
• Research skills, including the ability to evaluate information sources for accuracy, reliability, and currency.
• Ability to demonstrate familiarity with Microsoft Office and the internet.
• Ability to quickly learn new technologies and assist customers with them.

Responsibilities

• Providing reference, readers’ advisory and programming services for youth up to grade 12 and the adults who care for them.
• Interacting with children and teens to locate and use library materials.
• Assisting youth in choosing items to meet their interests.
• Helping youth find and evaluate information.
• Guiding youth in the use of electronic resources including databases, e-media, and computers.
• Working collaboratively on a daily basis.
